I really want to see the original doujinshi that started the anime. Has anyone read it?

Hai...it's not much though, it stops at about the end of the first third of the second episode.
There is really nothing in the doujinshi that is left out of the anime, IIRC.

I've read scanlations for five issues, actually. One was an original (messy) collection of sketches called "Charcoal Feather Federation," then came the two regular Haibane doujin issues, plus a third bonus issue, and lastly was a "Haibane Lifestyle Diary" or somesuch, which was basically a bunch of four-panel joke strips (a la Azumanga Daioh) and plenty of design notes from ABe on scenery & characters (as well as an introduction encouraging people to get ready for the TV series).
The main three issues only go as far as the second-ish episode, though. And CFF & Lifestyle Diary don't further the story at all; CFF really bears very little similarity to the end product beyond wings & halos.

I've read what I can find of it, and they're all really great if you're a Haibane Renmei fan, and even better if your an Abe freak. They don't really add anything to the already known story of the tv series though.

The "Charcoal Feather Federation" sketches are included in the artbook "Essense", published in the U.S. by Fanboy Entertainment. I don't have my copy on hand at the moment, but it should be pretty easy to find online, and you may be able to find a copy at a good comic shop.
