All right, now that we've gotten that straightened out...

All right, so I've been looking forward to this one for awhile. As our good friend Admiral Ackbar has explained to us, this series is a trap. Rather, Mariya is a foul-mouthed trap, crossdressing as a girl for reasons that have not been entirely explained yet. Or touched on more than lightly, really.

Kanako, who is technically the main character (but often overshadowed by Mariya; this isn't a bad thing), is tired of what's happened in her life so far, so she enrolls in an all-girls Catholic school in order to find her true love. She would prefer it if you just said that she's "into Yuri", rather than the somewhat more blunt way Mariya says it, and if you still don't understand what I mean by that, you're probably not ready to read this series. Unfortunately, since Kanako found out Mariya's secret, he's decided that he's going to keep tabs on her to make sure she doesn't blab about things. Mariya is extremely thorough about this, and to be honest, watching him mess with everybody is fun. Especially Kanako, who knows he's a man but finds him too cute to resist, a fact he exploits regularly.

Maria Holic is not the next great literary masterpiece, by any stretch of the imagination. It's not challenging ideas, either. What it does do is break convention on a number of levels purely for the fun of it, with unexplained threats (stick what where!?), unexplained events (what's this monster doing in my bag?), and a better knack for funny than most things I've read lately. For example, when Mariya is crossdressing as a maid to provide fanservice. Or, rather, manservice. Even the art style works well for the series; I don't think it would be as funny if the style was much more or less detailed than it is.

Not recommended for very new fans, since they probably won't understand all of the jokes (they're not obscure so much as cultural), but for anyone else, this series is worth a look into.
Overall Rating: B
