I might get flamed for some of these examples, but remember these are only my opinions.
Evangelion: People praise this anime like it is a revolution in the anime industry, and while i do like the show overall i dislike the ending of the tv show and abhor the second half of the "end of evangelion movie"(I'm sorry I think the director was on crack when he wrote this i.e. spoiler[commander ikari reaching into girl's breasts, HUGE ass eva, shinji masterbating etc...] But the show does have its good episodes, i just wish they laid off more of the trippy stuff and made more episodes with action. Cowboy Bebop: now don't get my wrong but i love this series alot, but i just think its slightly overrated, most websites will have it 10/10, A+, in the top 5 rankings etc..., and while i do love the series a perfect score is pretty high. Yes the show does have great characters, the music is probably the best, and the animation is top notch, but i thought some episodes were just not very fun to watch(but the majority were good episodes). but maybe I'm just more of a fan of episodes that link together. Trigun: this series is "good", but I'm not to convinced that its "great", yes it does get better in the end, but there are many flaws in the series. The animation is imo horrible, it was released the same year as cowboy bebop but it looks like it was released in the early 90's. The music is nothing spectacular, and the story isn't that great, and don't get me started on some of the awful character designs(mainly bad guys) Scrapped Princess: I'm sorry but this is one anime that i did not enjoy to watch, its as if the creator wanted to make the show as boring as possible. i could only watch alittle more than the 1st half of the show, cause i heard thats the good part(although i hated the good part...) good animation, but character designs are to generic, music is alittle above average but nothing memorable other then the ending song. FLCL: word's really can't describe what this show is about, it has virtually no plot, but yet i don't hate it. they way i look at it is a big good looking and sounding music video. Its very whacky, but sorry thats not my cup of tea. Ghost in the Shell Stand alone complex: they should have called this GITS: stand alone complicated. The show tries to be too serious at times, and technical jargon is always flying around(i mean seriously, your always trying to rewind too see if you can understand what they just said, but it turns out that it still doesnt make sense) but nevertheless i still do like the show for its animation, and characters. I just wish it would try to not take itself to serious. Shingetsutatn Sukhime(sp?): Vampire anime that started off great, alot of potential but darn it there is hardly any vampire slaying after the beginning. Just a bunch of talking that does not move the story at all. Raxephon: alittle overrated because it tries too much to best evangelion, there were times where i thought unit 01 from evangelion was going to pop on screen. This is one of those *what you thought i was going that way?, well fooled ya! i'm going this other mysterious trippy way...* type of show. I thought i was going to see mechs fighting, but let me warn you, i don't think there is even 20 minutes of fighting in this whole series. I really wanted to see more action(when they fight its great) and alittle less acid trip. Remember these are only my opinions, and i like most of these shows, its just that some of them are alittle overrated. i was just wondering if any of you felt the same way about these shows?[/b] |

What do you mean by overrated? Because of it's popularity? If you like a show, what makes you think other people won't like the show too?
Take cowboy bebop for example. You say you love the show but you feel that other site are giving it 10/10 which makes it overrated huh? What should be rated better than Bebop than? Perhaps you don't understand the depth of Bebop and FLCL. Perhaps you don't understand the concept of Trigun or Raxephon. When you watch another series, most don't even compare to the series you listed. Try comparing these with some of the show taht you don't feel is overrated. You seem to have a problem with every popular anime. Perhaps it's just nitpicking but no one anime is perfect. Last edited by darkhunter on Tue Jul 20, 2004 5:40 pm; edited 1 time in total |

According to "Anime Profiling: An Introduction" by Dormcat et al., apparently you prefer more action than drama/chatacter development. Most anime you've mentioned emphasized more on chatacter development while the action scenes are linking stories together or just for eye candy.
(Sigh) you don't know much about modern weaponry or Nordic mythology, do you? Read this first, then watch episode 7 and compare its story with our world, from WW2 to Middle East today. I got chills and cold sweat when I did. |

Well you see i don't really need it to compare it to anything. I mean if there was only one movie out and that movie was "the olsen sisters get a new dog" would that movie be a 10 out of 10 because there is nothing better than it? that doesn't make sense. I'm not saying that these animes suck, on the contrary for the most part i LOVE the animes listed above its just that some of them get a ungodly amount of attention. If you like a certain show i listed thats fine, I'm not trying to insult anybody's taste. Hell the shows i listed above are among my favorites. Overatted doesn't necessarily mean its bad it just means that i don't think its perfect as some publications might say. |

If he likes action over character development, he will get tired of anime VERY fast. Character interaction and story progresstion are more important than how many things blow up in one episode.

yeesh, sorry if i come off ignorant, but guys i do like story and character development! One of my favorite animes, X, has extremely strong character development, especially kamui. spoiler[i greatly admires the fact that he decides to choose the dragon of heaven instead of earth, something he was walking down the path towards .] and notice that while X does have action, its not absorbed into it. I like it because it has a nice balance of everything. so yes guys, i do realize that story takes precedence over everything Last edited by jimdohg on Tue Jul 20, 2004 5:59 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Like I said, when comparing them to other average shows like Initial D, Knight Hunter, Narue's World, Neo Ranga, Excel Saga, Saiyuki and the thousand countless anime shows out there, you will see that those show you listed as "overrated" offer a greater experience to many (reason why it's so popular among so many people).
Of course no anime show is perfect, but we do give credit to show deserve them. Not everyone has the same taste. You can be an action junkie and dislike show that don't have enough action. But that doesn't mean that show like RahXephon are overrated because it doesn't have enough action. Also you put a spoiler for the X comment, because everyone seen X yet. I'm soory for what I said. You just seemed, at first, one of those people who are only into anime because it is more violent than american animation. Also, I agree with what you said about X. But I like anime like .hack//sign over something like, say, Gundam. Anyone who has seen .hack//sign knows that it has little to no action in it.

I just thought I'd take the time to respond to some of this. I just rewatched all of Eva and have gotten a new appreciation of it. I'll answer these as I listen to Komm Susser Tod. For the ending of the TV show. It's either love or hate. Yeah Gainax had some money issues so they use a lot of still shots and poor animation. But that's beside the point. Aside from putting virtually himself into the characters in Evangelion, Anno stated that in making Eva he did not want it to just be about the mecha. More so, he wanted it to be about the characters and what went on in their minds. And that is what the last 2 episodes deliver. They ask questions like "Who am I?". "What is my purpose". Things like that. So if you aren't into character development and things like that (and I"m not talking to you just people in general) then you won't like the end of the TV series. Because it's a look at the minds of the main characters of the show. As for the End of Evangelion...I'll take it in big chunks. first off spoiler[ There's a reason Gendo puts his hand into Rei's breast. Rei has the soul of Lillith in her. Lillith gave birth to all humans, much like Adam is the father of all Angels. Gendo has fused with Adam. Remember Kaji gave him Adam in an embryotic state? Anywho - it is fused with his hand. So he places his hand inside Rei's body and draws it down to her womb. On the surface this looks pretty perverted, but it is actually the merging of Adam and Lillith thus leading to the final steps of the Third Impact.]. As for the part about Shinji. spoiler[Look at it this way. Shinji's undergone a massive amount of stress. He has just killed the ONE person who has told him he loves him and cares about him in Kaouru. He has just found out the Rei is a clone. Misato has all but abandon him. And Asuka - the one girl he truly desires is in a comatose state. Shinji is a young boy - he saw something and he reacted to it. He doesn't enjoy it though, as evident in him saying he was pathetic.]. As for the "huge ass Eva"...what are you talking about? Anyways - I dunno if that cleared anything up but that's just my take on what you commented on regarding Eva :p |

Exactly! thats what I'm trying to say by posting this, many of the animes I've listed above have been listed as perfect, by many people and reviews. While i love the animes i DO NOT think they are perfect as some might say. I do know that i might have done some nitpicking, but i could make a list 10 times bigger in appraisal of these animes, however all that stuff has already been said, i just wanted to take a look at the other side. |

I cant really say there is too much depth in FLCL although im sure it is possible if you try really hard to find a deep meaning. anyways yeah many of the animes you mentioned are extremely good and extremely popular. Does being popular automatically cancel out being good? Thats like saying that metallica(early metallica 1983 - 1991) werent good because they had a lot of fans. Does something that is good have to stay an "underground" thing in order to be good. As soon as it becomes mainstream and everyone has seen it, it has lost all meaning? Almost every anime you mentioned has at least some good qualities and instead of finding its faults we should celebrate its good qualities. |

With the exception of Ghost in the Shell, I've seen all those anime, and agree with you on most of them. With the exception of Trigun and the aforementioned anime, I've written reviews for all them on animenfo, and every one of them has a rating below 8. (But a score of 7 is a very good score for me.)
Evangelion: Yes, this is definitely an overrated title. I liked it, and it's one of those anime (like Akira) that you have to respect even if you don't personally like it. The first half is merely decent, and the second is pretentious tripe. The characters, however, are brilliant. It's the characters that made that anime what it is. In fact, interesting enough, of your list, this is the ONLY anime with great characters. Good anime, but definitely not all that. (7.3) ....and End of Evangelion was just a piece of shi...crap. (4.8) Cowboy Bebop: Oh, the most overrated anime of all time. I agree with you about the music (the best OST in anime) and the animation. But the characters (with the exception of Spike) and story were merely mediocre. Any anime that has only five episodes that contribute to a story is NOT a masterpiece. Oh, and I prefer my villains to actually be IN the anime. Basically, Spike and high technical merit carried it to the height it enjoys.(7.5) ...to darkhunter: I can think of LOADS of anime that is better than Cowboy Bebop. Trigun: No, this isn't overrated. It's what Cowboy Bebop SHOULD have been. Scrapped Princess: I liked this anime, but again, it IS overrated. Great animation, weak soundtrack, and even weaker characters. Shannon is the best character in the anime. Others, particularly Uinia and Leo, are pretty useless. It also has an hilariously bad ending. (7.2) FLCL: This isn't overrated either. In fact, like I said in my recent NGE review, it's the only true great work by GAINAX. (7.7) Ghost in the Shell Stand alone complex: Never saw this one, so I can't comment. Shingetsutatn Sukhime(sp?): It's Tsukihime, and I didn't like this one. Although I think the others on the list are overrated, this is the only one I really DIDN'T like. The pacing put molasses to shame, the characters were bland, and the love story was rushed and nearly non-existant. Not to mention the extremely anti-climactic ending. (5.2) Raxephon: I JUST saw this. I don't think it's overrated being that its oft compared with NGE. Underrated if anything. I liked this too, but its biggest flaw is its underdeveloped and unmemorable characters. Oh, again....the last few episodes were a cop-out. (7.2) So basically, with the exception of FLCL, Trigun, and maybe RahXephon, I agree with you. Last edited by Tasha on Tue Jul 20, 2004 7:21 pm; edited 5 times in total |

I very mad about what J.C staff did to Tsukihime. The anime is nothing compared to the game it is based on. I mad that the gave people the wrong idea of Tsukihime.

to answer the question above, hell no. I mean the lord of the rings movies are very popular but i love those movies. I think your missing the point. I'm not saying that the formentioned animes are bad, I'm just saying there a little overrated. I mean there would be no point in saying that a crappy show is overrated would there? because a crappy show isn't overrated at all! Hell, i could slam a bunch of crap animes out there, but i won't because that's not the purpose of this post. the purpose of this post is to point out the fact that some of these larger than life titles are really good but not perfect as many say. |
