Wasn't quite sure where else to put this, so here. Tim Burton is going to direct a film based on Mai the Psychic Girl,
the first full length manga series to be published in English. Apparently he's wanted to do the film for a while, but it got bogged down as happens in Hollywood.

I rather like this way of making films from anime and manga. Don't go for the big titles that fans will complain about, and don't go crazy on the special effects. Get a director with vision and passion for a small title with a decent story. Something to make people say "this was originally a manga?" So what do you think? (try to keep rants about Burton fans to a minimum Wink )

God no Burton, keep your filthy mitts of this!

Unless he suddenly returns to his Big Fish level of quality, I really don't want to see this happening...

For a project he's apparently been wanting to do for years, I'm surprised it has never been mentioned before. But recently there have been at least two other movies rumored to be his next project, and they turned out to be only rumors. I'll buy it more when an official announcement has been made, especially since Mai doesn't seem like his sort of thing. That, and they're suggesting in one of those articles Burton may start it before Maleficent? I don't see that happening.

Wow, out of everything, he wanted to do "Mai the Psychic Girl". I've only own the first volume and it's like a marginally less melodramatic and less ridiculous version of Crying Freeman (but still pretty forgettable). Yeah, doesn't seem like anything Burton would do, unless he's going to put a twist to it.

Sweet. Never heard of this manga/just looked at plot summary. I don't think it will be a success. Well it's different from the norm.

Anyway, as long as he includes his dark stuff, then I'll be fine. Alice in Wonderland was horrible. He should do Ghost in the Shell though. That would be a hit if done properly.

Sounds interesting. Burton is a good director who does some great films. I just wonder how close it will stay to the source material?

The movie can't be any worse than the Speed Racer, Dragon Ball Z, and Chung Li movie. Though the Dragon Ball Z movie is easily the worst of them all and Speed Racer is a easy second as well.

Though I really don't think any movie in the last two years is a terrible as the Dragon Ball Z movie.

HMM...I don't know. I always say Burton doing a movie version of somthing like xxxholic or Pandora hearts if he ever made an anime/manga based movie.

BTW: I thought his next movie was a modern adaption of "The Adams Family"...at least thats what I had heard.

If he's going after Japanese properties, he should make a movie based on the game Okage Shadow King. It has his name written all over it.

Burton and MAI seems like a weird pairing, but this has been talked about since the series was still on the stands. I think something out of Hong Kong or Korea might produce a more satisfying product.

animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=2443&page=22 He got the rights to the series aggggeess ago, so many years ago it probably predates ANN, which is why the only references is in the title's trivia [and again, so early Winona Ryder was still young enough to potentially star in it].

Wierd Thought- Burton has been working on getting the Mai film made since around the time it was still a recent item in VIZ's catalogue. So, some of the people scratching their heads on the combination might actually be younger then the project itself.

Not sure where I remember reading this, but he had considered doing it as a musical

edit--- hey heres the musicians who worked on it Smile

I think this could be very well done. I tend to trust Tim Burton to do a good job and he has rarely failed me. Plus the manga seems very interesting and right up his ally. I'm sure he will be respectful to the original materiel and make a quality film. I think the story would fit in well with his directing style.

Also I noticed someone said that he should adapt Ghost in the Shell. I would like to disagree with this. For one that movie (or series depending on what GITS your talking about) would not fit his style at all. Burton tends to prefer to do dark/gothic theater rather than sci-fi action dramas. Also I don't think Ghost in the Shell can be replicated, it was simply to amazing.

Not a big fan of Tim Burton. He and M. Night are battling it out for the title of Hollywood's #1 One Trick Pony as far as I'm concerned.

This will probably end up as some oddball gothic/lolita styled story featuring Johnny Depp and/or Helena Bohnam Carter.

Mai isn't a series which has aged well, so I'd be ok with it if it was Batman Tim Burton. Now, it'd be more appropriate for Matthew Vaughn.

fist: Replace is with was. Sweeney Todd still proves he's got it in him, but he's clearly getting lazy.
