From a site, apparently Yen Press and TOKYOPOP have C&D alot of titles from scanlation sites.

Waitaminute, some of these titles haven't been printed in YEARS. Or got dropped. And didn't TOKYOPOP loose the license to some of these titles (which automatically means they also loose enforcement capabilities....right?)?? What gives?

Just because it's out of print doesn't mean that Tokyopop doesn't have the rights to it.
And it's possible that Tokyopop is acting on behalf of Kodansha in regard to the titles that were taken from them (for example, Chobits). Another possibility is that said sites directly scanned the Tokyopop editions, which Tokyopop still holds the copyright to (I know mangafox is notorious for uploading scans of translated material).

Who cares "what gives"? I'm glad if they're removed from scanlation sites.

Aside from a general enforcement of rights, Yen Press may also be seeking to remove unlawfully uploaded content they have the rights to in preparation of their online version of Yen Plus coming out. The scanlation sites shouldn't have any material up they don't have the rights to but typically unlicensed titles would be overlooked. The fact they kept titles up that were licensed and available (even if you might have to look hard) tells me whatever sites you're talking about weren't even in the "honorable thieves" category of scanlators.
Were the even scanlators? How many of those "scanlations" were just scans? A lot of sites have started to just post scans of the official English mangas. (Wow, the only arguement they had going for them was the whole "we're just fans working hard to make other fans happy" bit. Now they're just flat out violating people's rights for fun and profit.)
I'll get off my soapbox now though. Please, if you want to read any of those manga, consider either buying or borrowing the official releases. If you can't do that, at least e-mail the companies and ask them to post them online. (If all the scanlation readers did that, we'd probably already have a massive LEGAL digital delivery system.)

"What Gives?" in relation to "TOKYOPOP lost licenses, can they still enforce" query. Just to clarify.

Losing a license doesn't mean they can't act to enforce the owner's rights. If Tokyopop is asked to act on behalf of the owners, then they have the authority to act. The Japanese have a harder time enforcing their rights directly because they're, well, Japanese in Japan. It's just easier to ask a company in the US that has a better understanding to the legal culture and general laws of the country as well as the ability to act relatively easily in the region.

As much as I support them getting taken down, it is odd that they are also taking down ones out of print, where they cannot be profited off ever again (unless the most secluded store happens to still sell copies).
That is, of course, perhaps a sign of the series getting re-issued or rescued?

They have a perfect right to. Some of the series uploaded used their scans. Even if TP no longer holds the rights, no one should upload the TP edition of an out of print series just because it is still TP's translation. There's also the deal with foreign companies.
Yen Press' Comic has also been removed, I'm happy to say. Someone was scanning the IceKunion and YP editions.

Exactly, they might have plans to reissue them at some point, and some of the older titles are still getting reprinted. They do regularly put up OOP lists- some titles are ones they've lost the license for, some are ones they still have, or have an option on. The companies they got them from are still their business partners- I imagien if these titles were direct scans, there's also the fact that the translations are still copyrighted to them.
For that matter, most of the OOP titles I see there are Kodansha ones, and Kodansha's been sending C&D's themselves for a lot of their titles, so there's that too.
Anyhoo, nice to see. Noticed some VIZ titles in there too- VIZ still distributes their remaining stock of Urusei Yatsura, and print all of Rumiko's work, so they'd have good reason to ask that that be removed. I imagine they have plans for it at some point.
Go Team Manga :) A lot these titles are very easily available from your local and online manga retailers. Even the OOP stuff can be had if you're patient and look around- got some Marmalade Boy for $1 each recently. Not everyone sells them for crazy amazon prices, and there's always the chance they'll get reissued [c'mon VIZBIG ed. of Marmalade Boy and Urusei Yatsura].
Also, really liked Saver, TP's ed of the manwha was great. Hope they continue it someday. I'd rather people intrigued by it track down the volumes published to encourage sales and bring it back rather then have them check out scans and contribute nothing.

It is a little odd that they are going out of things they don't have the rights to (don't the Japanese own the rights to the translations or something?), but perhaps they were acting on the behalf of the Japanese because they had asked them to or acting in good faith for the Japanese rights holders.
But taking this stuff down is always good. People who pirate the official translations make me sad.

Its good that they're trying to get these removed from scanlation sites, but Its not going make much of a difference, especially if the title is still running in Japan. Although if its ended then some sites might actually take them down and keep them down.
Remember when Viz removed all those series from MangaFox afew weeks ago? Several ongoing series (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Rosario+Vampire II) are already back up. Although I didn't notice any ended/fully available in english series, so as long as its not still running in Japan and available in English, the scanlation sites might actually listen. Or they might not...

My thoughts precisely. Think about it people, how would you like it if your money was taken away? Not very much, unless of course, you like that type of thing.
More power to Tokyo Pop and Yen Press. Illegal scan sites only cause companies to lose money and people to lose jobs. And I can only speak for myself, but I know I couldn't live with the guilt of causing a person to lose their job. Especially if I knew them.

Good for them for enforcing their rights, but what I find most interesting in this is the confirmation that Yen Press is going to release all of these Higurashi arcs, including all the answer arcs.

It's been a big seller for them, which is why they've released so much of it so quickly [I think it's bimonthly at the moment- the norm is quarterly for most of their titles]. The more often everyone buys your fave series, the more regularly it'll be put out, the higher the likelihood you'll see similar series or more work from the same creative team.

Actually, another poster had a different take. If you're not being published in the Yen magazine, you get a faster release schedule since Yen obviously doesn't want the volumes ahead of the magazine. Which makes sense, since Soul Eater still has a slow schedule, and the only Yen Press title that seems to come close to competing with its sales is Black Butler.
