I see an article like this and I want to facepalm a little. But then I think of how much I enjoyed the "Otoboku" anime series and I just sit here a little confused as to what to say. And yes, I know, guys showing up in girls' outfits in anime is nothing new....

Wouldn't it be funny if this became a trend in future anime series where it'll be "bishoujo", slice-of-life shows of really cute boys doing cute things in cute skirts.

I don't see why this would be a shock to anyone, and it's not really something found only in Japan. For a western example of something similar, just look to our Drag Queens. Though some of them started dressing as women later in life, a lot of them started with their sisters or mother's clothes at an early age.

Many of the crossdressing in anime and manga happens to be there for comedic effects (e.g. Jun Watarase from Happiness!). Crossdressing stuff in the entertainment media aren't meant to be taken seriously and are for the lol. Although there ARE some people who do wear female clothing in a daily basis. But I see the issue of what to wear (whether it is guy wearing girl's clothing and vice versa) is more of a personal thing than a societal thing (even though some societies frown on this, even in Japan). As for the said magazine, I have no idea if it's meant for boys who want to wear Mary Jane shoes or it's meant for comedic purposes. EDIT: Oh yeah, I searched the word "otokonoko" at this dictionary. That's a different term with the same pronunciation. The term for boy is "男の子" or literally, "male child." The term for the phenomenon described in the article is "男の娘" or literally, "male maiden." It's similar to how the term for a boys-love otaku ("fujoshi" or 腐女子) happens to be pronounced the same way as the term that has a very different meaning: 婦女子, which means a wife or family woman. Jun isn't only for comedic purposes, he had his own route and sex scenes in Happiness! Re:Lucks.
That's 男の子, this is 男の娘. 娘 means daughter or girl by itself, but it's also used to make words like meganekko (眼鏡っ娘) and dojikko (ドジっ娘). Meganekko is a glasses girl, dojikko is a clumsy girl and otokonoko is a boy girl (I have seen this often translated as boy maiden). Edit: And Egan Loo managed to post this 2 minutes earlier. |

Wow! One single kanji can throw me off big time. But I did read something like that at the MAL article on Mayo elle Otokonoko:
EDIT: The funny thing is that there is a Japanese wikipedia article on Otokonoko, but not for the English one: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/男の娘 P.S. the online Japanese-English dictionary I used does have anime terms like otaku, yaoi, yuri, lolicon, and moe. Just out of curiosity, is this sort of thing for guys or girls...? Or just anyone who likes boys dressed as girls? The art style of that particular images makes me think it's aimed more at guys. Oh Japan! To each their own. ^^;

This is nothing new. I already know of 2 Anthology books out that both specialize in crossdressing boys.
The names are [Anthology] WAaI! Vol.1 and [Anthology] Josou Shounen Anthology WAaI! Vol.1 actually as ads for crossdressing products, Like wigs. special underwear, and fake breasts. |

WAaI! is a quarterly magazine, not a book like Josō Shōnen Anthology. Likewise, this upcoming Oto Nyan is not a book, but a magazine. As linked in this article, ANN already reported on WAaI! last year because it was the first regular magazine of its kind. Now, there is a second, "rival" magazine, and that's news. |
