According to Amazon, FUNimation has license rescued Excel Saga.

Thanks to WTK on Mania for the tip.

While I'm glad to see it being kept in print, I think I'll hunt down the Imperfect Collection instead for the ad-vidnotes and more artwork.

It is true, the AD-Vidnotes are awesome, I was actually a bit of an anime novice when I watched the show, the notes taught me so much. But I'd almost like some sort of Blu-Ray version, even if it's an upscale. I've always wanted to use a screencap of the girls dancing in the opening credits as a desktop wallpaper, but it looks like fuzzy crap.

Oh man, I have made many a GIFs from this show... Good times, good times.

I doubt we'll see a Blu-Ray release though. Even for an upscale, they can't work with it unless it's in natural widescreen. They'd have to chop it up otherwise.

Awwww, darn, Excel Saga is not Paranoia Agent, when are they gonna rescue that one? Seems far overdue if you ask me, I think I get a little angry at Funi every time they announce a rescue that isn't Paranoia Agent.

It would be an upscale; it doesn't look like it was done on cel/film, and virtually every digitally-animated series from that era was animated in SD.

Not true. Several older 4:3 shows have received JP or US BD treatment, such as Ouran HSHC, Angelic Layer, Nadesico, ROD, and Stellvia. None of them were cropped/stretched -- they just have to be encoded with pillarboxing, kind of like old DVDs with letterboxed 16:9 content.

Same here. I tried watching this when I was newer fan, but I don't think I was ready to "get" it; Nabeshin being a whackadoo certainly didn't make it easier. Now that I'm more seasoned I like to try it again, but I want to have the vid-notes. Hey, if anything, the price for the original IM-Perfect Collection should go down Very Happy .

Excel's been out of print for awhile, glad they picked it up. I guess this means Funi now has the most Nabeshin titles considering they also have Tenchi GXP [and Baka and Test for that matter].

IIRC ADV trademarked the term. And it even has ADV in the name: AD-Vidnotes.

Because of this, ADV probably kept them even though they lost the rights to the actual show itself. I guess it might be possible for FUNi to work out some kind of deal with ADV/Sentai to use them and just change the name, but that probably would be too complicated and time-consuming to bother with.

Glad the show can be recirculated, even though I already own it.
Funi has been doing a lot of license rescues lately, which I definitely approve of.

Maybe I will finally try to watch the whole thing. I rented the first volume, and only could watch the first episode. I really enjoy Tenchi GXP, & Nerima Daikon Brothers, but for some odd reason I could not get into this show....

If they come out with a nice upscale on bluray with some special features I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. I love Excel Saga, but I have the thin pack that is lacking any sort of extras what so ever.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about if it comes out on Blu-Ray. I just thank god they picked up Excel Saga!
