The Noh Mask was talking about it was carved from an ancient tree from which a shard of the Shikon Jewel was embedding centuries ago but yet the Shikon Jewel wasn't fragmented at the time, was it? Is it implying that this has happened before?

The Noh mask incident happened in the present time, so the ""jewel shard imbedded in the tree" business it's referring to is Kagome's shattering of the jewel back in the Warring States era.

Yes, but he still has a point; that it creates a time loop/paradox of some type. Because (minor Inu Yasha: The Final Act spoilers)spoiler[the jewel is made whole in the past, thus in the future, Kagome's time, no shards should then exist. However, it did exist at one point until Kagome and Inu Yasha brought it to the past after defeating the Noh mask, thus closing the loop, and theoretically erasing the very existence of the mask or creating some type of offshoot universe.] Gotta' love temporal mechanics.

It's a pretty simple timeloop. The Noh mask shard in the Sengoku era (the "past self") is never found by either Kagome or Naraku, nor does it need to be because it's "future self" ends up taking it's place spoiler[once the jewel is completed]

Even after spoiler[the Jewel of Shikon is completed and destroyed at the end of series, the "past self" of the Noh shard still exists, trapped in the tree, until it's made into a mask and found in the present era, where it becomes the "future self" and brought back to the Sengoku Era by Kagome]

Funny enough, in the manga (don't know if the anime cut it out or not) after the whole business with the mask is finished, Kagome wonders to herself if there are other shards in the present.... we never see anymore. I wonder if it's because Takahashi realised how confusing it all is.
