I'm in the mood to track down some movies that happen to have multiple releases. This has lead to the problem of telling the difference, if any, between the original release and the re-release. The two moves that I'm having trouble with are Jin-Roh and Perfect Blue. Jin-Roh was released again in 2007 under the anime classics (or legends) labeling, and Perfect Blue has an Essence of anime label. Does anyone own these versions, and if so, could you tell me if they are in any way remastered?
I appreciate the help, and the answer may save me some green. |

The Anime Classics release of Jin-Roh is pretty much similar to the 2002 regular edition of the movie: you get the movie without any special features and the movie is as it was when released five years earlier.
Not sure about any differences between releases for Perfect Blue though. |

Thanks, that helps. Now I just have Perfect Blue to agonize over.

All the Essence of Anime releases are identical to the original releases. Actually, they ARE the original releases, just with a shiny new slipcover. Take that off and its the exact same cases and discs as the original releases.

I've got the original 2000 release of Perfect Blue is there a reason why its listed as being 81minutes (on amazon) versus Essence of Anime at 83 minutes?
As far as Jin-Roh I have the Special Edition Anime Legends (2005) and aside from the extras DVD and the soundtrack everything is the same as the 2002. |

You must have the R-rated version of Perfect Blue that was released from that time. From what I recall, there were R-rated and unrated versions of the movie released here in the states. The R-rated version removed and altered some of the more graphic violent and sexual content found in the movie such as spoiler[Mima's rape scene, her nude modeling gig and some of the murder scenes]. The Essence of Anime release (which I own) is the unrated version. Completely forgot about this little fact. |

This is my version: Link. Its also shown as unrated. Maybe the 2007 version is including the previews in total runtime? Maybe Amazon is just incorrect with the run time details. |

Now this has me curious. After digging around online, I think I have an answer. All DVD versions of Perfect Blue are unrated while VHS included three different versions: the R-rated version of the dub and the unrated version both dubbed and subbed. By the looks of it, the R-rated dub of Perfect Blue is the hardest version of the movie release to hunt down, if anyone even cares about hunting down an edited version of Satoshi Kon's directorial debut film. I have found a site that lists differences between the R-rated and unrated versions of the movie, but I won't include the link here since it is NSFW. |
