About last March or so, Tokyo Pop got itself a makeover, and started it's new releases in that format. At first I liked it, because they brought in honorifics and such. But I had been collecting Kare Kano since it came out in Jan. '03, already very attached to that format, and loved to see my long lines of them all together. But then, at volume 11, they completely switch it over that format! Now I have my nice long line of them and then... boom! Big red TokyoPop icon!
I wrote to the editors to see if they still release it in the old format, but to no avail. What I'm wondering is, have other people had this problem with them? Inconsistancy knocks off a few of their points in my book.
At least with Viz, when they start a series wrong, they finish it the same way! (I'm really liking the adjustments their making in new series, though.)

=/ Except...Viz quit making Fushigi Yugi left-to-right after volume 8, so fans have to switch to right-to-left after 8 (if they started a left-to-right collection), in which the volumes are much smaller and wouldn't align well with the previous volumes.

I do appreciate that they didn't change Ranma.

If you ever get a chance, take a look at the first twenty-four or so monthly issues of CCS. Where Tokyopop went through about five different label/imprint names and cover designs ^^

The only thing that I noticed was "that glaring red icon." It looks bad on almost all of the spines.

Tokyopop's new "look" isn't that bad. At least all they did was change their icon. It's understandable that as companies change, they'll change small things like this. Tokyopop is more known now, so they want their logo to stand out.

Your comment about Viz, however, is dead wrong. They started releasing all of their manga in the larger format (larger height and width), but when they switched to the smaller format, they did that with all series. I was buying ranma when at around volume 23 they stopped with the large format and switched to the smaller one. Similar thing with Inuyasha. My No Need For Tenchi are all large format, while my All New Tenchi series is in the smaller format. Same with Battle Angel and BA: Last Order.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not complaining that they are using the smaller format, i just wish they started earlier so i could have saved some money and had more of my manga be the same size instead of going large to small to large again as i have rows of various series together.

Oh, and btw, Viz completly changed their logo back around January 2003. Before it just said "Viz" in plain letters, but then they merged with another company and their logo changed to the one it is now. (The eye reading a book with "Viz" written on it.)

The most annoying thing about the big red robofish logo is they use it for current series still being release. It makes the cover look horrible next to the original, almost non-existing logo. The worst case is Priest. The bright red logo doesn't match with the brown "leather" style of the cover.

I knew that I just wasn't thinking. People call me weird some times Laughing But also about the new look, If we wen't and , like, did a protest, you think we could send in books with the "red logo" and trade it for the old tiny white one like when I traded in my defective Dragonball Vol. 16 for a correct one? If only I had their email address... Rolling Eyes

Yeah, it looks pretty bad on Kindaichi and Planetes too. It actually looks decent on Sgt. Frog though. And they are in fact putting the red logo on the older series too. So far I've seen it on Love Hina and FLCL.

They do it with the latest printing run of any Volume.

They've already done it to Vol. 5 of both Ragnarok and Initial D, at least 4 or so Volumes of Love Hina and Chobits, and a few with Rebirth, Mars, and Dragon Knights (That i'm aware of).

What has been bugging me for forever is how Tokyopop went back and reprinted the Paradise Kiss series with new covers, including completely different spines that do not match the original one on my shelf. Since vol. 2-4 in my collection are in the new format, I decided that I might as well wait to buy the 5th volume when it was reprinted. However, I have yet to find a reprinted vol. 5 in any bookstore. Ordering it online seems like a lost cause because it's never clear on many store websites exactly which version I'll receive (If anyone has managed to receive a reprinted copy by ordering online, please tell me!) I'm wondering if Tokyopop never ended up printing vol 5 with the new cover, even though pictures of the entire reprinted collection of 5 volumes have been adverstised in their various graphic novels. I know I'm being picky, but I will hate Tokyopop if it turns out they never reprinted vol. 5 after it was advertised!

As for Viz switching from flopped to unflopped formats druring the middle of their print runs of several series, I don't mind that as much. With my Fushigi Yuugi collection, it looks OK with one half of my volumes with tall spines and the others with shorter ones. Rather than being a stupid design change a la Tokyopop's red Robofish, the switch allowed for lower prices, so I can live with that. I don't begrudge Viz for initially publishing Fushigi Yuugi flopped, since this was back in 1998 (?) when unflopped manga (with a few exceptions) was unlikely to sell. Viz seems to be rereleasing Ceres and FY in the smaller format pretty quickly, so at least those who are starting their collections now can have a uniform set. Plus, Viz's new logo appeared around the same time they started using the smaller manga format, so it was really part of the company's complete design/format overhaul than an inconsistity that suddenly popped up as with Tokyopop. Not that I'm leaving Viz completely off the hook Wink , as their Angel Sanctuary manga releases have suffered from some pretty sloppy cover/spine presentation. Am I the only one that's bothered by the black frame around the volume # on the spine that keeps disappearing and reappearing every other volume?

All right, I'll end this post and stop being anal. Smile Although this whole topic is a rather anal one Anime smallmouth

Give me a few weeks. I'll try and see if my friend at the bookstore can find this "Holy Grail" of manga. Laughing

Sure that big red logo doesn't match the other spines of my Tokyopop books. Sure it doesn't match when I organize my mangas accordingly, but it doesn't distract me from the experience of reading the manga. I don't care if the cover of a manga book is pretty with a small logo, or pretty with a big distracting logo, it is what is inside that counts.

I can't agree more! I've even tried reorganizing my Angel Sanctuary to keep from distracting on that. Same thing happened with ADV's Pretear. Volumes 1 & 2 had white spines, but volume 3 had the cover design strech over the spine.

I guess everyone being anal here (including myself) would be known as the "courtly" manga collections .vs. "carnal" ones (according to an essay about courtly .vs. carnal book collectors, sorry I can't remember the name of it right now- but it was a great essay.) The look of everything together is very important to courtly readers, and harming the book in any way or form is taboo. Carnal, like previously stated very well (and I applaud how well), prefer to ultimately enjoy the context of the book. Almost makes us courtly collectors feel like hypocrites or something, huh? Laughing
