Space Brothers

Genres: science fiction
Themes: astronaut, brothers, childhood dream, JAXA, mature, NASA, space, technology

Plot Summary: When they were young, the brothers Mutta and Hibito promised each other they would become astronauts. Now, in 2025, Hibito has followed his dream to become the first Japanese on the moon, but Mutta has just been fired from his job. His brother reminds him of their childhood promise, and Mutta decides once again to aim for space.

Anime Marathon Discussion (Nov. 6th, 2015 - Nov. 15th, 2015) starts here

----------------------------------

All right, I'll be the first to admit that the part about spoiler[Mutta's resmue being sent to JAXA without his knowledge] is a little contrived. But I'm willing to overlook a little contrivance if it leads to a good story.

I'm glad for the bit about the UFO; it promises that there's going to be ultimately something more to this than just Mutta going through astronaut training. And I think the end bits with actual astronauts are a nice touch.

All in all, if this series manages to not fall on its face in the next couple episodes, I think I'll have a new current thing to start recommending to my fellow science fiction fans who haven't learned yet that anime isn't just giant robots and tentacle porn.

I personally hope the UFO doesn't come back into play - it's an interesting motivation for the brothers to decide to go to space, but I don't think aliens would do anything to improve the story and would probably just bog it down.

I'm surprised there's not been more discussion for this one, it was on a lot of people's lists of shows to watch. I assume everyone's just so engrossed in the story they can;t find time to post Laughing

Speaking of the story, I am enjoying it. I'm particularly curious to find out why Mutta has spoiler[fallen behind in Hibito's footsteps, and what event was the catalyst for that.] Hibito irks me somewhat since he seems to be able to do no wrong.

There have been some nice touches, the brothers being born during significant sporting events (one bad, one good) was pretty cool and the spoiler[loosening of the screw on the chair during the JAXA interview was also pretty clever.] There's a nice liberal use of rousing music and it feels like a 'normal guy follows his dreams' anime would feel.

Thumbs up so far.

I finally gave the show a try after spending the whole day ding practically nothing but waiting for Aquarion EVOL's release. I didn't expect too much so I was really pleased with what I watched.

The show didn't try hard to be comedic but some parts made me laugh a bit and giggle. The first episode's introduction was perhaps one of the most different and intriguing introductions I've ever seen. Using sports events as symbolism for both Mutta's and Hibito's "luck"/situations was a nice touch. Episode 2's scene with the sugar was also done well. The way the animation plays - going through different angles and point of views makes the show much more fun to watch.

The story progresses very well and this show is really fun to watch. I think I'm going to be in for the whole ride.

I'd been looking forward to this series and the first episode didn't disappoint. It's nice to see another series with a non-teenage protagonist (not that those are inherently bad, but I find it more difficult to relate to them in many cases). I also have to give props to the choice of Hiroaki Hirata for Mutta's voice; after hearing him in Tiger & Bunny, I fully accept him in the role of "hapless adult." Smile

The one very minor complaint that my husband and I had while watching it was that we didn't think that the common style of automobile would have changed to look so faux-futuristic in the span of just a decade or so, but it was more of an amused afterthought rather than something that was outright bothersome.

I thought the taxi looked very much like some actual existing cars I've seen on Top Gear, although they're very high-end cars so I was confused about why one of them would show up as a taxi. So I guess the idea is those design ideas have trickled down to more everyday cars in the intervening years.

Only 3 episodes in, but I'm starting to think that anyone who isn't enjoying this show can't be human. I'm not even sure a box of puppies could be this heartwarming.

I've only seen the first ep, but I like it. It reminds me of other similar space anime, like Planetes, Moonlight Mile, and my avatar, Twin Spica. All series which I cannot resist, so I really like the genre and this seems another great entry into it!

Also, anyone else find it strange that, as kids, Mutta and Hibito were the same size? Despite being 3 years apart? If they were teens, I could buy that, but they're like 13ish and 10ish, right? Anyway, it's a minor quibble, I hope someone licenses this.

Man, I bet Mutta was thinking "Johnny, you must calm down! Don't go wild! It's not time to be free yet!"

That whole first minute and half of the episode made me crack up. The special exam would certainly turn me off from being an astronaut or any work place.

No need to be shy, Mutta. I enjoy watching women run too - especially if they have big bust. Laughing

So far this is turning out to be a really nice show both heartwarming and funny. For me its turned out better than expected. I loved the lung capacity test, it reminded me so much of the movie The Right Stuff. Very Happy

I'm ... I'm in love with Astronaut Lady. Embarassed Yeah, I've been enjoying this from the get-go. Like an earlier poster mentioned, it's so great to see a show that isn't about schoolkids. My one minor beef is the number of flashbacks per episode. I understand why they are there, but I have a personal dislike of flashbacks. Yeah, they obviously shed light on events in the present, but it's the present I'm interested in. Flashbacks, for me, just bring everything to a grinding halt (the one exception in this episode for me was the flashback of spoiler[Astronaut Lady as a kid watching her Dad do the same thing Mutta did with the spacesuit.] That was cute.)

Damn, I do love his voice, and acting too! I thought Mutta sounded like Tiger, now I know I wasn't daydreaming. He's perfect in those roles.

Definitely digging this show. I'll add my praise to the fact that its not about school kids. In fact, I'm pretty sure one of the reasons I find it so endearing is, as an adult, I can (almost) fully relate to these characters. And I'm a sucker for space stories. There's something romantic, and, at the same time, adventurous about going into space.

Episode 3 had me giggling during the opening scenes. Now there is a classy, understated way to insert some "adult" humor. I like it! Wink

I'm watching this on the free stream, so I just saw episode 3. Gosh, there are a lot of bouquets of roses just lying around JAXA, aren't there? Smile

I suppose this inevitably means that Mutta and Serika finally pick up the courage to talk to each other, she's going to say he reminds her of her dad, and then he'll spend most of an episode crushed that he seems like an old person to her.

Serika is my favorite character at this point, but darnit I do want to see Mutta succeed.

Finished episode four. Things are moving right along, spoiler[but there's still the third round of testing to go. I'm thinking episode five is going to be filler-ish, but with some brotherly bonding. That might be interesting, so I look forward to it. And we finally get to meet the pug!]

Its the little touches in this show that make it fun. spoiler[Like Mutta "marking the wall" next to his brother's picture. Laughing Or Serika's reaction after finishing her interview "What am I going to eat?" as she skips along. And Makabe's wedding ring. Never noticed that before, and I don't think his family has been brought up. I hope we get to learn more about his home life. Personally, I love seeing married men in anime, like Tougasa from GITS. It makes the series all the more real for me.]
