Well I own 11 volumes of Shaman King, in japanese, and I can tell you this.
First, the manga is far better than the anime, but the anime is STILL very good, so that says something about the manga. There are quite a few differences bettwen the first 5 volumes and the tv series. You have more arcs and side stories. You learn more about Yoh`s school life, you get to know more about Tokageroh`s past (like that he had to eat his mother`s flesh in order to survive as a kid) and alot more. The manga is far more insightful than the anime and lets you look into more in the life of the main characters. Plus the artwork is really good. You definetely should get all available volumes.

The manga's also more graphic then the anime at some points...at volume five in particular, the anime didn't show Manta's stomach being cut opon to show his muscle and innards, and it didn't include the scene where Faust surgically removed a broken bone from his leg, and replace it with a new bone found in the graveyard.

also the anime didn't show him enjoying some morphine through a straw later that scene always cracks me up.

All in all, the manga is better! That's why I read the manga. As for Manta's gut showing, that was very graphic.

Anyone want to mention the censorship in Viz's release of the manga? Like, Yoh's leaf symbol being removed from all his clothes (pretty much a pot leaf, but the kanji for Yoh=Leaf), and I think the Tanuki of the Ren and Stimpy-esque duo had his, uh, man bits reduced.
