I noticed that the Ranma 1/2 manga series is 38 volumes, and was surprised how close Viz is to finishing the release of this series, with volume 30 coming out sometime later this year. I love the premise for Ranma 1/2 and the wild characters, but have never considered actually collecting it because 38 volumes of wild comedy might be a bit of a strain. So, has anyone progressed later into the series and can tell me if its worth it in the end? Does the manga start to become old after a while, as I have heard the anime does?

Step 1: buy a volume.

Step 2: read it.

Step 3: repeat until finished with the series or bored, whichever comes first.

To tell you the truth, it did become a little old for me after about the first 10 volumes or so. Your results will vary.

But even so, the first several volumes were brilliant! I'm not in any hurry to take these to the used bookstore. I'll probably go back and reread them a number of times in the future (and if the mood hits me, I may pick up the series again from there).

Ranma is like a very good American sit-com. You don't read it to find out what happens in the end, you read it to see (and laugh at) what's happening right now. You can tell right from the first three chapters what two main characters will hook up in the end, so the fun is not the surprise finish, but the stuff that happens on the way.

So... Aaron White's advice is really the best advice there is for this series.

I was one of those who read the original in its entirety, even though the series was uneven and I enjoyed it less and less towards the end, because Ranma created such great characters that I needed to see their resolution, however predictable.

But your mileage may vary, so follow Aaron's very wise advice.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm an obsessed completist who will finish anything I start and don't like to bite off more than I can chew, but with this series I might just go ahead and buy it on impulse. Whether or not I get tired of it eventually I guess I'll just have to read and see.

Learn to let stuff go! It's better to drop something than to waste time with something you don't like and that isn't important. Life is too short. When you lie on your deathbed you won't be thinking "I'm sure glad I read all 38 volumes of a manga I didn't like."

I mean I love Ranma and will read it till the end, but c'mon.

Or you could borrow them from the library. Depends on how your libaries are where you live though. It doesn't hurt to check the database (or your wallet Anime hyper ).

As for my opinion on the series. I read the first few volumes of it and just kind of got bored with it. Really just depends on if you get into or not kind of thing......I guess..... Neutral
