Well, I had to deal with this when I was addicted to Blood Alone (whose fate is now, fortunately, in the right hands), and now I'm going through it all over again.

When is Princess Resurrection Volume 8 going to be released? It's been way over a year now, and there are no signs of a release from Del Ray.

Furthermore, what's with the weird release dates for a lot of manga companies? Viz takes half a year per volume with "Bokurano Ours" and "Kingyo Used Books", among others, which is odd considering they are both series which either have a bunch of volumes available to translate already (the case with "Kingyo"), or are already completed ("Bokurano".) And don't even get me started on Yen Press' sketchy publishing cycle with "Bunny Drop". These are both companies which have decent revenue coming into them (Viz from it's mega-hit franchises like "Naruto", "Fullmetal Alchemist", "One Piece", and others, and Yen from being backed by f**king Random House Books, one of the world's biggest publishing firms.)

This progressive slowdown in my favorite series is a bit disheartening. Granted, I AM happy that this annoyance isn't affecting my current favorite series (20th Century Boys), but still...

So, in short, I suppose I'm looking for news on Princess Resurrection Volume 8, as well as some answers (hell, even theories) on why the manga industry, which is obviously alive, is being plagued by downright cruel release dates.

1. Del Rey has been weird lately. Maybe they'll start putting out Princess Resurrection in omnibus volumes, like they're doing with a lot of other series.

2. Kingyo and Bokurano are being published online before they're printed. You can check them out here. That's one reason for the slow release schedule.

Another reason is that those two titles are Signature titles, which usually have a much smaller fanbase than the main Viz offerings. I would guess that the demand for them is too low for Viz to pump them out much faster than they already are. The "4 volumes a month" business model can work for series like Naruto or One Piece, but it would most likely flop with a smaller title. Just because they have "powerhouse" series doesn't mean that they can stand to lose money on everything else.

3. How is Bunny Drop's publishing schedule "sketchy"? Looks like new volumes are coming out exactly every 6 months.

Again, those companies may be better off financially than many other manga companies at this point in time, but that doesn't mean they have money to spare. They're doing what they think works financially for their company, in order to make sure each of their series is profitable-- isn't that much better than other companies who outright drop (or don't even tell you they've dropped) their low-profit series? I would much rather have 1 volume every 6 months than no new volumes, ever.

Like ZepysGirl said, these are being released online a chapter at a time and Viz is putting out new physical volumes only when all their chapters have been released in that fashion. In other words, they're trying the Japanese approach (serialise it as affordably as possible - free in this instance - to build an audience and then collect it later in book form) only with a website replacing the anthology magazine.

Publishers are only now starting to see the potential of josei works (earlier, pre-Nana, josei releases by Viz and Tokyopop mostly sold in very low numbers even when they were critically acclaimed) - you can't really blame Yen for using a slow release schedule to test the water.
The more of us who buy each volume of Bunny Drop as they come out, the more chance that similar titles in the future will not only be licensed but also released more quickly.

You're confusing Yen with Del Rey. The former is an imprint of Hachette (which itself is part of Lagardère Publishing) - it's the latter that's an imprint of Random House.

I can't help you with Princess Resurrection #8 but, generally speaking, the more a title sells (or is projected to sell) the quicker it will be released.
Releases are likely to be even slower in Del Rey's case - over the past year or so they've massively slowed down or entirely dropped a whole bunch of titles (and finished others off with omnibus editions). I haven't heard anything about Del Rey's manga division actually losing them money but their prose fiction and their non-Japanese comics (i.e. media franchise tie-ins) have clearly been doing better for them so I guess it's not all that surprising that they're concentrating on what sells.

Del Rey's on its deathbed, so you should probably start goading other companies to rescue Princess Resurrection.
