According to Viz's twitter page, their announcing something next week that they claim is going to change everything.

As for what that may be, I have several theories:

1) Site Revamp: Viz's site pretty has the bare minimum of what they need to sell their stuff. Adding in forums and stuff would be pretty sweet since they could communicate with fans(which will hopefully convince them to release the rest of Monster on DVD).

2) Major Acquisition: If this turned out to be the case then it's definently the anime to Katekyo Hitman Reborn. They've been promoting the manga on their Shonen Jump site and are likely planning to add it to the magazine. Considering the anime's over, them picking it up wouldn't seem to far off-base since the series has a reasonably large fanbase.

3) Digital Manga: I'm not sure if they'd be in the position for "simulcasting" them, but Viz is taking more of an interest in it, so it's not that unlikely that they'd try to expand it. If that is the case I hope they'd also show us some of the newer manga releases in Japan too(it'd be awesome to get the newest JUMP manga like Enigma).

4) Merger or Partnership: I think we can all agree that 2010 hasn't been a particularly good year for Viz, as they had to shut down their New York branch, as well as them not releasing several of their newer titles on DVD, angering a good chunk of their fanbase. It may not necessairly be Funimation(heck I could see them picking up 4 Kids), but doing that kind of business deal would ease financial burdens a bit, and depending on who the deal is with, get the anime community interested.

Well, it was mentioned in the news item Navarre Has 6 Interested Buyers for Funimation, posted on September 17, that "Navarre expects that final offers will arrive within 30 to 60 days," so it's possible I guess. Viz properties handled with Funimations exhaustive releases would certainly make people happy... although monopolies can be worrisome.

I'm surprised this twitter announcement itself isn't in the news feed. It's speculative but note-worthy.

I can't exactly say I'd be happy at Funimation (a great company with tons of titles I like/want) being subordinate to VIZ whom I'm not exactly thrilled with unless it means that the rest of Monster will be released and Funimation is left alone to release like it normally does instead of adopting VIZ's flawed releasing policy.

Although the timeframe's right for a possible Funimation buy-up, since writing that I've also read that there was a similar teaser of a "Big Announcement" in last month's Shonen Jump that will appear in the next issue.

So maybe it will be a manga/magazine related announcement instead? The person who said he saw that announcement put forward the theory of series being released at a more simultaneous rate.

What I want it to be: new major aquisitions for manga and saying that they'll reprint some of their classic and really good shojo in a big edition. Like Basara so I can finally read it.

What it will probably end up being: some online manga reader thing. To keep up with...I think Dark Horse made one. If it'll have older OOP titles on it, then yeah, I'll be happy if it'd let me read Basara.

That is how I think it'll play out, but since I do get a ton of my manga from Viz, I will be interested in knowing what their big announcement is.

Spastic Minnow: If you're theory is correct I would be very depressed. Honestly I really don't like the way Viz handles their anime and in the end the only thing I really buy from them commonly is the Viz Sig line stuff. I think Viz attaining Funimation would end badly.

Not to mention it seems to me like that would be a bit like Target attaining Walmart (Just my opinion). It seems to me like Funimation is the larger company so I couldn't really imagine Viz buying them some how.

My guess for the big announcement: They got a new major title most likely. Im assuming it's something that is very successful and ran in Weekly Shonen Jump.

I suppose another theory is they might be starting some new business plan like increasing access to online manga viewing.

That may have been me actually. Very Happy

After seeing what other people's thoughts are on it, I doubt it's just an acquisition(though that may be part of it). The manga reader thing would make the most sense at this point but who knows?

Viz Twitter page

Well, this could mean anything really. But it's the "Game Changing" that may be the clue. A new Video Game perhaps?

If it's anything other than the next DVD set of Monster, I'll be disappointed.

Seriously. It's coming up on a year since the last release. That's ridiculous.

I have it on fairly good authority that it's going to be about their acquisition of Seikon no Qwaser.

That has to be the best joke I've heard all day. Heck if there's one thing to give Viz credit for, it's that they generally steer clear of ecchi anime, not to mention the manga's owned by Tokyopop, which wouldn't give Viz the incentive to get it.

I'm going for either a digital manga simulcast for their JUMP line, or a partnership/buy out/merger(whichever applies), with another company.

All I want Viz to do is reprint the Maison Ikkoku anime. Perhaps Key The Metal Idol as well.

That's probably not it, though, since that's not really "game changing".

My desires which I highly doubt will happen for their "big announcement:"

-Launching a re-release line of their older titles.
-Give up any titles not amongst their shounen anime franchises to another distributor who will actually care enough to release everything in its original version (i.e. uncut version of Zoids: Chaotic Century), continue incomplete titles on DVD distribution (Full Moon wo Sagashite and Monster) and launch re-releases of titles that have been out of print for years.
-Start to seriously pay attention to the wants and desires of their fans by running polls to let fans seriously suggest ways to improve their marketing of anime and manga, as well as future titles to acquire.

What the likely announcement is:

Like suggested by a few others, either Viz will announce a new anime/ manga title they have licensed or they have some big business plan in response to the financial woes they've been facing.

same here, the Sig and IKKI manga lines are what i watch from Viz.

and the message about the major announcement is plastered at the top of the VIZ ANIME page, but not the VIZ MEDIA page. could that be a clue?

EDIT: of course, at this point, even updating their webstore would be a huge improvement. not "game changing" by any means, but mildly shocking anyway. i ordered children of the sea #3 from amazon and got it a month or more ago and its still not on the viz store site. it only lists up to Ikigami #4, while #5 and 6 are on my shelves now. #7 was supposed to be out this past august according to amazon, but i don't see any mention of that anywhere on the viz store page either. several other titles are similarly lacking (though many "missing" titles do show up on Viz' main products page? isn't it a better deal for them if people are buying direct from their site?).

I seriously hope the are releasing CROSS GAME in DVD form. That's been my favorite show released in the last few years.
