What? The Kodansha awards a self-serving marketing strategy? Who would have thought. But yea, these awards seem to be pretty pointless considering they only acknowlege their own mangas, and usually only the most popular ones (sorry to all the Akamatsu fans, but does Love Hina honestly deserve what many consider the biggest award given to a manga?). Not that all the things that win the award don't deserve recognition (Akira, Vagabond, and the recent Nodame Cantabile are just some of the great winners). |

Just think of it like Employee of the year. Some title can pull more people in than others.
