Dream Eater Merry
 ... with great dreamlike fanservice.
I must say that dream is a topic I'll always be interested by default, much like Greek mythology. Perhaps because nightmares is what I get more often. The character design is, well, quite stylish with some characters, but the heroine gets the first place. Her facial expressions are particularly cute when shown up-close. I'm not expecting great things, but the story does interest me. If anything, this title will be joining the other relaxing titles of the week (which is good, since lately I haven't seen many of them). For those interested, we have fairly fresh seiyu involved in this. Perhaps not the male lead, but the other protagonists, yeah. I knew it! Cats are vile creatures on standby just waiting to take over a human body. I doubt you'd be able to do that over my aluminum foil hat, you little pests. I liked it. Like you, I don't expect great things but it'd be nice if it stayed fairly entertaining. My only nitpick with the episode was the way they portrayed the male protagonists ability... multi-colored nerd candy through a snapshot pose... just seemed a little silly but I guess no more silly than the cats shooting rocket launchers or Chaser John Doe.
The art was pleasant I guess, it reminded me a bit of Soul Eater and Fairy Tail which are unfortunately series I dropped after a few episodes or so. Giving this one a shot for now mostly because I'm intrigued with where Merry comes from & etc. |

Action, dreams, fantastic character design, I feel like this anime was made for me.
I know some people had a problem with the main character's easy-going nature, but I think that's one of the best things about this series. He shows emotion, but he isn't annoying about it. To be honest, I'm getting a little sick of every male anime character having a conniption when a girl touches their hand. John Doe has me particularly interested. I can't wait to see what becomes of his character. |

I liked the cats in the dream world and how it was set in the anime itself. I like the fact that there's some drama with whats going on and enjoy the way this show is set up.
I will be watching it as the season moves on. |

I have a feeling I would enjoy this if it didn't play itself so serious. Like Merry crying at the end of the first episode. Felt completely fake and I really didn't care. Especially with all the little cartoonish cats around. The show has no sense of atmosphere, and I really didn't like the corners JC Staff cut when animating it.

Maybe. I didn't notice it at all.
I had to check the episode, because I didn't even remember it. 
Yeah, I didn't feel anything either (I'm quite sure that's part of the intent here). I think they just want to make sure we understand that she's desperate to go back home.
The price to pay when they spent too much with a generic romance. Stuff with more potential just end up like this. |

This was one of the shows I was really looking forward to watching. I like it quite a bit but I'm a little confused. Then again, I think I'm supposed to be. Like others have said, good character designs, beautiful backgrounds, and good voice acting. I like a lot of the concepts they're using in this show and am really looking forward to more.
I'll agree with Megiddo that there were some definite shortcuts in the animation department but, so far, I can overlook it. |

It has nice animation, and was mysterious for the first episode. I'm not really like the story base on the synopsis though, and I'm feeling that it might have cliche elements* (which I don't mind) coming soon. I guess I'll try out the whole series, but I'll probably watch it when I'm really bored.
* Cliche elements as in "we met when we were younger", etc. At least, that's what I felt from watching the opening. Also, when I first read the synopsis, I thought of "Tsukihime" right off the bat. So I wasn't too sure whether to watch it or not, but I'm glad I gave it a try. I'm not going to expect much, but I'm going to think it as a refreshment from the series I usually watch. |

I liked it. So much of anime reminds me of whacked out fever dreams anyway, so something like this feels very appropriate. Kinda wish they came up with a better name for the Big Bad than Chaser John Doe, though. Not quite as bad as Friday Monday, but getting close.

Something about her character design just clicks with me. Maybe it's because of the color style. |

Well thewhole cats that act like humans is quite stupid.What is with Japan and cats?Is there some cat deity or something?The show looks okay but they could have went with anything other than cats.

Agreed. I really liked that about him, he feels "normal" with a bit of everything to his personality, I also liked that he didn't butt in on the fight self-righteously like usually happens in the fight after the first meeting (often to break the ice) when Merry's all confident there stepping in in the first place. Also as you said, I liked how they handled the cliche "falls on him" meeting moment in rather original fashion, with no exaggerations/obvious future love interest overtones, I think they basically did it in the least mind-numbing/overused way possible. Plus he surprised me when he whacked/grabbed the cat with the canon. Somehow he managed to not annoy me in the previous way while simultaneously not being a wuss by doing that towards the end of the ep. I was pleasantly surprised, at least so far, I expected to want to slap him for the usual annoying offenses lol.
So true. So many great aspects about her hot design

I had no expectations when I started the episode, I expected it to just throw in the gimicky ability of his to make him intersting and we would get fanservicey girl fall on him and it would be the standard ecchi harem show. Also the whole thing of cats in the description just sounded bizarre and made me wonder the point.
But I was pleasently surprised with the first episode, I think a couple corner cutting, but the action they did show was quite thrilling. The cats were strange, but their cranky cartoony look mixed with Chaser John Doe worked quite interesting. I am guessing that maybe that was like a colective cat dream world, and Chaser, well I am not sure what Chaser is but he looks cool, if he returns I hope that they keep him faceless as the way he is has a nice nightmare effect, actually I think he is my favourite design I have seen this season so far. (I thought I recognised his voice, he did Peterhausen Ichiban Ushiro no Daimao, not a really big thing but it is cool to me.) Talking about nightmares, Merry Nightmare is an awesome name, in fact so far she is quite pleasing in general. I thought we would get heaps of panty shots, or perhaps like Kobato (her character design looks kind of simular) but so far she was pretty cool, just hope she doesn't get too whiny. We will probably have more fanservice of her, but I am hoping that they manage to do it tastefully. Well now it has gone from something I had no expectations about, to something I am looking forward to. |

Is there much potential? The manga never charted in the sales rankings nor is it acclaimed (I've heard that it's very generic....some wondered how it even got selected for animation), so it's probably safe to say that there aren't many expectations on the production side. The involvement of Shigeyasu Yamauchi and his collaborators are what's attracting the attention, and that has nothing to do with the story. Yumekui Merry was probably adapted because of the author. He apparently has a cult following in the doujin scene (manga based on Touhou), so there's some chance that the most hardcore otaku might bite. Having IOSYS do the songs is the same thing.
It was done quite well within the limitations. Yamauchi produced an awesome storyboard, and I think he did a good job balancing the animation (lower on frame count but stylized) and post-production aspects (visual effects, background processing). If they can somehow maintain a similar level of quality throughout the series, I'll be happy. |

I'm not sure what it was, but I really got nothing out the first episode. Nothing with the characters particularly moved me one way or the other, and I didn't care about plot. Probably will end up dropping it if this lack of feeling continues, but I will at least give it another episode or two. I actually like the designs for the most and the opening song wasn't too bad.
