I'm not surprised. Wasn't the last movie just a troll because it was an arc that aired during the show but was just made into a movie?
I'm guessing if I'm correct then it's no big shock that it would do so much better then the first one. I'm still happy to see those results, the more Gintama love the better.

I'm hoping this will inspire Sunrise to make more episodes of Gintama, I don't want the series to end, even though I still have almost half of it still to watch...

That is pretty impressive. Unless it drops dramatically in its 2nd weekend a la Hunter x Hunter it should be looking to do around 1.5 billion yen by the end of its run I think.

No shock.
Gintama is one of the only shonen shows to consistently sell 10k DVDs per volume.
Just need more Gintama love on the TV now.
