Recently I've been hearing alot about how good Ghibli movies are, and I was wondering if maybe someone could suggest some titles for me, and maybe tell me what they like most about Ghibli movies. So far I havn't seen any that I know of but I plan on seeing My Neighbour Totoro.

Your thoughts?

It blows me away that you haven't seen any. How on earth did you miss them? Seriously. Even the worst Ghibli movie I ever saw (Porco Rosso) was still good. The best Ghibli move I've seen was Spirited Away, which I first saw on the big screen and bought on DVD the day it came out, along with the two other Ghibli DVD's that released that day. I'm not sure how any self-respecting anime fan could have missed all these wonderful Ghibli releases all this time, but you're in for a real treat if this is the first time you're going to see them all.

Ghibli films...

- Tend to focus on young girls with amazing strength and compassion
- Have amazing plots and characters
- Have very high production qualities
- Have some of the best dubs in the business
- Have excellent transfers to DVD (R1 at least)
- Have zero fan service
- Are family friendly and fun for all ages

I strongly suggest that you watch Kiki, Laputa, Nasicaa, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away (in addition to your stated intention of watching Totoro). They're all excellent.

The animation is amazing and storyline is pretty good in Spirited Away, although Ghibli movie plots are kinda wierd. You need patience when watching them.

Personally, I recommend you listen to foreign movies in their orignal language and read the subtitles so it remains authentic. You get the full effect if you listen to its original language.

I didn't like Laputa that much. I didn't like it because the plot didn't appeal to me and the characters didn't appeal to me. As well, I thought it dragged on a bit. Furthermore, spoiler[ the end didn't make sense to me at all. (I'm not sure if this is spoiler info or not so I decided to tag it just incase).] Hmm... I think Spirited Away is my fav Ghibli film and then Totoro is my second favourite. Nah... maybe not. Spirited Away and Totoro are both awesome in my books.

I like Spirited Away because the plot was so unique and strange. And because the artwork is so amazing. I liked how so many characters were introduced in the movie without being confused about who's doing what. Overall, I just liked it because it was a cool plot.

I like Totoro because, of course, the chinchilla's are super cute. You do know Totoro and his friends are chinchilla's right? Another reason I like it is because I found it quite fascinating how you didn't really know if everything the kids were experiencing was just a fragment of their imagination. I thought that put a twist on the movie. I sometimes wonder if there are 'cat buses' zooming about everywhere... ha ha ha Laughing .

edit= did some elaborating on my comments

Transfers refers to the quality of the video after it is tranferred to MPEG2 (DVD format).

Of course, the language one listens to a show in is a matter of personal preference, but I would take issue with calling something less authentic for being dubbed in a different language. (Except in rare instances were a dub is used to fundamentally change the story).

Hmm, I'm kinda afraid to post here and say this, but I don't really think the Ghibli movies are as good as they are cracked up to be. They were mildly entertaining and had beautiful animation, but I just found them, out of the two I watched (My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away), to be just kind of wierd, but not in a "funny" wierd more like the "totally freaked me out" wierd. I'm probably the only person on these boards who doesn't love them, I liked them but didn't love them. There are much better anime IMO. Don't start flaming me for expressing my opinion.

http://www.ntv.co.jp/ghibli/ (Japanese)

Nausicaa.net, the "most official" unofficial Ghibli site, is the best source for Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli in English.

Hmmm... I think listening to its original language can give you the full effect of the movie the way it was intended to be viewed. Perhaps I've just had bad experiences with dubbing but most of the time, I find the english dubbing to be terrible. First of all, the voice actors stretch out a sentance (or sometimes speak faster) so that it can match the lip movement. Second of all, I hate the way voice actors over enunciate. That's probably the way they're supposed to do it but man... too much fluxuation in their voices. Hard to explain.

Did you like those three movies? If so then you should continue down the strange but beautiful path of la Ghibli. If you thought those movies were good then most likely you will think that the others are good as well. Generally it's either you like them or you don't.

My favorite studio Ghibli movie is Whisper of the Heart, which by some strange twist of fate is the only Film not being released in the US in the near future (Not including Ocean Waves). I do believe it has something to do with John Denver... (lol).

Howl’s Moving Castle, which was released in select theaters not too long ago it among my top Ghibli movies. Others such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Naucicca, Spirited Away, Only Yesterday, Grave of the Fireflies are all classics in my book. It's really hard being an anime fan and not seeing at least one of the movies mentioned in the previous sentence.

My least favorite is (like most) Porco Rosso... even though it still is better than like 85% of anime out there... An other Ghibli film that is at the bottom for me is Pom Poko. Too many nut sacks maybe? Who knows! Razz. The Cat Returns was an other one that I thought wasn't that great. I felt it was too rushed and for some reason I wasn’t really "swept off my feet" like most other stuido Ghibli films.

So ya, if you liked those three then you will like the rest.

A lot of that could be psychological, you've convinced yourself it's awful and convinced yourself it's "impure" to the point it will always have that feel. In the end everything is a dub with animation and most scripts in english or japanese tell the same story in much the same way with minor cultural differences these days. It's one thing to have a preference, some simply like one over another for certain reasons, but when you start claiming one isn't pure or is terrible then you're taking it into the realm of stated fact rather than opinion.

I personally don't see most of what you refer to in modern anime to any large degree, of course I listen to both carefully and I often find good and bad on both sides as opposed to the one side that most purists claim. It's fine to prefer one over the other, but to openly attack the other as impure with less effect then you walk on shaky ground. I might have agreed with you 5 years ago, but sorry, not anymore.

Hiyah!

Ghibli movies have a "I-don't-know-what" (in Spanish yo-no-se-qué) that just makes them the best. Nausicaa, Spirited Way and a movie where a girl is able to talk to cats, but whose name I don't remember are my faves.

Really? Well, I'll try to summarize the movie to see if that's reall the title.
MAJOR SPOILERS:

spoiler[Haru, a Japanese girl saves a black cat from being run over by a car, and surprise surprise! He's the Prince of the Kingdom of the Cats. In fact, it's his father who asks Haru to go th Kingdom, but a voice tells Haru to go to the Ministry of Cats instead. Thre she meets the Baron von Guggengheim and Muta, who help her to go there and try to fiz a big problem: the King of Cats wants Haru to marry his son, Prince Lun. However, the voice who told Haru is from a white cat, Yuki, who is actually the Prince's fiancée, although she's a servant. But the King's obsessed with Haru, and will do anything to make her marry Lun. But of course, he couldn't do anything. Haru returns to the hman world, although she fell in love with the Baron.]

Well, that's about it. If it's The Cat Returns, I'll be very grateful.
And sorry if I broke a rule. I didn't do it on purpose

Of course it is. If you were capable to write a spoiler-ridden plot summary, why couldn't you simply take a look at its Encyclopedia entry?! It's almost unthinkable for me to see a person who can remember ALL CHARACTERS' NAMES but not the TITLE of a movie. I was more surprised that you didn't copy and paste it from some website, for a site containing this plot summary must have its title.

Use the spoiler tag next time.

Thanks for the explanation... It's just that I'm very skeptical, and I tried looking in Google, but couldn't find anything.

Arigato!!!

PS: Just fixed the spoiler tag n_n
