I finally bought 5 centimeter per second movie. The one with johnny Bosch is playing. This is a materpiece. However, it always depresses me at the end of the movie. This means that the moive did a good job. First time I watched it, I cryed a little. 5th time I watched it and those feeling were subsided, but I still think I am glad I bought it.

The first time I watched it I took it out of the player and chucked it in my "Sell" pile personally. I really don't like Makoto Shinkai's films all that much with the exception of The Place Promised in Our Early Days. The guy makes great looking eye candy but needs to learn how to write an ending.

I personally thought that the ending to Voices of a Distant Star was near perfect.

But yeah, 5 cm/s didn't have much effect on me. I kept wondering why the dude had the cell phone and never bothered calling the girl (or at least searching for her number in the phonebook or online). My favorite segment was the 2nd part, and that's because the dull guy isn't the main character in that part. Surfer girl was way more interesting.

I quite enjoyed this film. Smile I was lucky enough to get the Australian DVD quite cheaply from eBay. I enjoyed the first segment over the other two, though I enjoyed the whole thing by virtue of it being a slice-of-life film. spoiler[And having taken the Shinkansen, I can certainly relate.]

Agreed. The only problem with that one was it was too short. The manga version helps flesh it out a bit but still, way too short.

I liked the 2nd part the most too, though I didn't have a problem with the other two. It was the most enjoyable though since it was the least bitter of the bitter-sweet segments.

I may be in a minority but I loved the ending of 5cm. It made me tear up but somehow it really felt right. Shinkai's works are amazing but always a bit too melancholic. I'd love to see an unambiguously happy ending from this man. He's so good at making you feel the character's emotions through the art and flow of the story.

Unpopular? Show ne one person thinking is should end in another way. If it had finished in another way it would have turned into next unrealistic love story.

I did hedge my comment with a "may." Most of the posts I've read about the ending weren't clear enough to know if the person actually liked the ending or if they didn't. Most of the time the comments are limited to "it made me cry" in some variation. I've never really been clear on if people liked the ending, hated it or just accepted it.

Realism doesn't necessarily correlate to a person's personal like or dislike of an ending. I've seen more than a few endings that, while unrealistic on some level, were deeply satisfying and enjoyable. Of course, realism can be very debatable as what is realistic in a broad sense might not be realistic within the precise plot of the story and the specific characterizations.

Yeah, same here.

First part was unimpressive apart from the scenery porn until the boy actually arrived at the station.

The third part was incomprehensible and lacked any real scenes to make me care. Somehow he's ended up deeply unhappy but we don't see how, we're just shown a lot of moping. Yawn. And of course the girl is emotionally stable while the guy is emotionally dead; it shows he's weak and she's callous.

The second part was my favourite because the surfer girl was likeable and interesting. The ending to her arc was just so much better than the ending to the boy's arc.

Shinkai does beautiful scenery, but he has taken a step back in terms of emotional impact from The Place Promised in our Early Days.

One would unreservedly proclaim The Place Promised in our Early Days to culminate in an unambiguously positive state of affairs. spoiler[Since the central couple have been reunited following Sayuri's reawakening, it is difficult to see how any character's goal has not been achieved.]

Bearing the perspective of a great admirer of Shinkai, I can say this: when fans like myself use emotional terms to form our judgements of his films, we usually wish to convey a positive sentiment. (Exceptions to this most often stand out, by means of explicitly disapproving terms being said of the emotional responses in question. Of course, Shinkai fans tend not to be this way inclined.)

I think this was because spoiler[Tono (the guy) was afraid to lose the image of what she was like in his head over the years. He knew they were growing apart and this scared him but there was no way to stop it. So instead he nervously waited for her to call him.] As for me, I liked the 1st segment the best, it was so well directed and did a great job showing the emotions of the characters in a wonderfully understated way.

Personally I loved 5cm Per Second, it was a beautifully animated and directed film. People say that Shinkai's characters are flat but I feel that this was purposeful. The characters don't bluntly wear their heart on their sleeves because most people are actually like that, at least that's the way I see it. And I think that no matter what you think of his writing and directing style (I love it) you have to admit that the animation is astounding.

That is indeed a good interpretation of the scene, and that is indeed exactly what I thought. However, I cannot sympathize with such a weak character. I can't take the sudden dearth of commitment from the main character seriously. When you think of all he did in the first segment and then you compare that same character to the 2nd and 3rd segments, one just has to wonder what the hell happened. With no desire to at least contact the girl, how am I supposed to somehow be attentive to this guy, particularly when he has a cute surfer girl hanging on him?

Mopey guys are boring. Emo is boring. In Voices, the guy did all he could to remain in contact with the girl he liked, even if they were light years apart. I could pull for him. Sure, he was a hopeless romantic, but he did what he could. The same cannot be said in 5 cm/s. The main character deserved his misery due to his own inaction and that's all I could think throughout the entire 2nd and 3rd parts.

Yeah, I agree the story would have been much more interesting if he had tried to reconnect with her. Although it would
have probably lost most of it's impact.
