First over the past few months I have developed a spectacular thirst for a specific type of anime. Give me philosiphy, and deep characters. Give me something that is going to give me major emotional movement. The more sad I get about the story the better I seem to like it. Infact I am really getting into crying alot. In other words I have a serious fetish for series that grab me by my emotions and rip me about.
Anyway it started with Gantz. Which I really liked all the philosiphy, psychology, mystery, and generally good character developement. I asked for recommendations of similar series, and I got a few solid suggestions. I followed up with Rahxephon. I really enjoyed this series. I loved the happy ending in this series, but I most enjoyed the character developement. Add in alot of psychology, and a little philosiphy. Anyway I devoured this series. Since Rahxephon did me right, I took the stab at Haibane Remnei, and really enjoyed the philosiphy with religious undertones. I loved the redemption centric conclusion of the series, and thought the very ambience of the setting really set everything off well. At the same time I have seen Elfen Lied, and while I did not think it was bad it has not held my immagination, or my heart the way that the above three have. I cannot immagine why the only thing I can think of is I actually find Nyu to be a detractor for me. It felt like alot of pressure to expel next to nothing in the end. Maybe I have seen the story told in so many other genres that it just dosen't have the impact to me it should. Anyway I feal like I am kind of following a path here. I started with Gantz, moved onto Rahxephon, and then move on to Haibane. I think I want something closer to haibane then the other two at the moment. Anyway does anyone have any fealings on what series I should hit next? |

Zettai Shounen is a good one. The characters are pretty nicely developed as they learn to accept the supernatural around them. There is folklore tied in and some philosophy as well (with the "the world's membranes are becoming thinner). It moves slow, just like Haibane, but is well worth it.

I undesrstand exactly what you mean as far as wanting to be moved by an anime. Here are a few that I really like- I suggest you check them out... but these are just my opinions
 :
As far as philosophy goes, I suggest The Big O. That series is full of philosophical ideas as well as religious symbolism. It's one of my all-time favorites- a real treat. However, the second season (episodes 14-26- known as The Big O II) is pretty weak... so just be aware of that. Another anime with philosophical merits is Kino's Journey This one was great... each episode showed a different side of man's nature, as well as the customs of each different place that Kino visits. I loved this one- you should really check it out. As far as series that will move you: Wolf's Rain- this is the saddest series I've ever watched. Absolutely amazing. The dub is top-notch and it's teeming with mythological and philosophical undertones. If you haven't seen it yet, make sure you do. It's incredibly moving and well-done. Another moving series is Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. I don;t know how familiar you are with the Gundam universe, but this is easily the most emotional OVA in the Gundam universe. It's only six episodes long, but you become very attached to the characters in that short period of time. An amazing show, truly. Well, there's my two cents. Hope that helps you out .

No one said Eva? I'm shocked!!!
Neon Genesis Evangelion. Perhaps one of the most uhm...famous I guess you'd say, anime. Starts out as a seemingly normal highschool kid saves the city with the mech and ends up...quite differently. Make sure to get atleast the one movie End of Eva, the alternate ending to the series. It covers the space episodes 25-26 do. Serial Experiments Lain. What exactly "is" the wired?(re:internet) Lain learns and tries to understand what the internet has turned into in this anime. I found the ideas presented in this extremely weird, but quite unique. A very mind bending shorter anime. I can't help you with Haibane Renmei, I haven't seen it and haven't heard of many others close to it. |

Thanks for the suggestions guys keep them comeing. I actually got a huge chunk of EVA on VHS. So I saw the series a long time before it aired on CN. I have also seen all of wolfs rain, and Big O.
I am curious is lain a decent show. The people who made Haibane, also made Lain. I only saw a couple episodes on like G4 at like two in this morning. So they did not make much sense to me. Does it make more sense if you get to see it in a linear fashion? |

Is it a good show? I say yes and I believe from the majority of people who've seen it, that opinion will be backed up. Will it make more sense if you see all of the episodes start to finish? You got me =P Parts about the plot will make more sense but as I once read, and I'm paraphrasing badly, "Lain does more of asking questions and putting ideas out there, rather than answering them". This line was talking about the philosophy and abstractness of lain.
The story itself will make slightly more sense I'm sure but as to all of the happenings of the show, your own intuition is going to be needed for a lot of that. |

I'm going to suggest X TV. It's about the possible end of the world and which side is right and which side is wrong. Should the earth/humanity be destroyed and everything start all over? Or should the earth/humanity be saved and given a second chance.
Another would be Ceres: Celestial Legend. This deals with some of the myths that exist around the world and in Japenese culture. I think one legend is the Bamboo Cutter's Daughter, I could be thinking of the wrong legend though. This also deals with family: what is family? The one you're born into and who tries to kill you? Or, is it the one you make for yourself and who really love you. Of course that's not the only theme: Murder, betrayal, incest, teen pregnancy and lots of other fun stuff! Hope you find something you like. |
