I've recently found myself very much enjoying the Fanfare manga, and happened upon this one. Needless to say, I think its one of the best titles available over here.

Exellent review. Blue is one of the most emotionally complex and profound works available in English. It's rare that we get josei published over here, especially of this quality and appeal (I think the idea that josei can't appeal to straight males like myself is stupid). Aside from the exellent storytelling (the review smoochy linked provides a good analysis) I think the story manages to capture such an incredible range of emotions from the characters without ever having to resort to though-balloons or melodrama. I read it a little over a year ago and it made quite an impact on me, so much that I thought it was one of the best releases of the year. Not for everyone, but give it a chance.

As for more Fanfare manga, the book that has the most in common with Blue from them is Kinderbook, a collection of short stories from the critically accliamed artist Kan Takahama. Definitally check that one out, as it should be carried in some bookstores now. Another title I'm looking forward to is the new Jiro Taniguchi manga coming in October (forgot the name). It involves a hunter of some kind and a moose...sounds boring but Taniguchi is always great.

A friend let me borrow it and I read it. It felt weird at first since josei was something new to me but I gave it a chance. I did not get it at first but after thoughtful comtemplation, it was a great read. I liked how their relationship went through hardships throughout the story. The simplistic art is interesting but I never looked at it from the character's point of view until I read the review. It was the relation between the two characters that got to me. I would like to read from josei titles if we ever get them.

I've just had the pleasure of reading Blue as well, after seaching for it for over a year (finally found it in a Borders, of all places Rolling Eyes ). It was completely worth the wait. I love the realism in the relationship, all the way until its spoiler[bittersweet end]. Nananan's art style is always a treat, too; I love how she is able to convey such subtle emotion with such simple drawings. It was a phenomenal read.
