ok so amazon is teamed with borders. and since i had gift cards for borders i got a few books. i wrote about that a couple of months ago. my first shipment(4 books) came right away in fact i tihnk it was 2 days early. which in this case is an omen of bad luck. the second shipment (4 books) had to be delayed because one of the books was out of stock, which is vary understandable, a book cant be sent if they dont have it.. but they estimated theyd have the book between 3-6 weeks. so now its been 2 months. so i send them an e-mail (after almost giveing up searching for the "contact us" info because its vary well hidden.)they reply and tell me i probally didn't understand the schedual they show for my order.. and that it takes 3 - 6 weeks for an order to come in.. then they proceed to talk to me like im a child and explain every detail of why it takes up to 3-6 weeks and that sometimes they loose orders and its to sometimes be expected . so how am i not understanding? they say 3- 6 weeks and its been 3 - 6 weeks and its not here, and now their saying they dont know when its comeing in... that it MIGHT come in the next month or i might have to wait 2 months... though they did send 3 of the books in my last shipment(i have 7 out of 8) (just got them a week after the 2 month wait) so from what i can tell it looks as though they lost my order without saying they lost it.
on top of that, one of the descriptions of a book is vary misleading which lead to me ordering the wrong book... ill explain. series that have only one book dont have a number listed for that book in the description or title, like "rizelmine"**. but a series that has multiple books like "mars" has the number for each book in the description and the title. so when i orderd the book magical shopping arcade abenobashi and it had no number for the book listed in the title or description and no other books for that series came up in my original search for it i figured that was the only book in that series after all with them lableing books 1-15 "1-15" and series that have only one book with no numbers at all why should i think otherwise? even .hack legend of the twilight with only 3 books gets each book labeled "1-3"... turns out after i get the book its the second one in that series... so a big WTF goes through my mind. and i check the web and amazon doesnt have the first book listed at all and from their common practices it seems as though their attempting to pass the second book off as the first. after all who would buy the second book in a series if the first one is no longer available? after going back and inspecting the page the only thing that tells you its the second book is the small #2 in the bottom corner of the picture of the book, which i missed.. and im assuming other will miss it as well. and as far as i can tell the only company that still has the first book is walmarts website.. so now im going to have to find the first book and buy it, after all i cant vary well read the second one without reading the first.. after this i plan on writeing a letter to the company.. and never buying from them again. unless i get the first book free so any ideas as to what i should do? considering i didn't want to spend that much on the books to begin with (i know suck it up and buy the first book from walmart.. and i most likely will within the week) **rizelmine is relativly short and is currently being sold by www.borders.com the book only costs $4 brand new. what a buy, considering its price on the book is $9.99. buy 4 books and get the cheapest free if your willign to risk it... and can wait several months for the order.. |

If they haven't shipped the book by now, you should be able to cancel the order. I know that I've done that with Chapters (basically the Canadian equivalent of Borders), when an order took what I felt was a rather unnecessary delay.

I've been mostly happy with UK amazon for my manga needs so far. I do know what you mean about them not making it at all clear which volume you are buying etc. and often I need to cross reference it with a list of title names from ANN or something.
If one book is holding up an order, you can cancel that one book at no trouble to yourself. I did that when I accidently ordered volume 7 of Death Note without realising it was a preorder and it was holding up my whole order. It is annoying and pretty stupid when the start of a series is out of stock or unlisted - I was trying to buy Tezuka's Pheonix series, yet the first book was only available through a marketplace seller and cost £36 for some unknown reason. Still, the prices, when compared to the RRP, are really pretty decent. |

Why don't you order from Rightstuf? they typically offer a reduced price from msrp on everything. and manga is one of those things that you can't get away from the msrp at brick and mortar shops.

Just Manga is another fantastic online store for manga. Everything is discounted and you get free shipping over $40. I've ordered a lot from them and I've never had a problem.

i order from amazon on a daily basis and never really have any gripes. but i do know that many retailers have been having trouble aquiring tokyopop titles. i have been in contact from someone from roberts anime corner store and even they are getting 3-6 week answers when asking about releases and then being delayed after that time period is up. it isnt amazon's fault when releases are delayed. you can always cancel the order, as long as it isnt in the process of being shipped.

Funny, every manga volume I've ever bought from Amazon teamed with Borders has come on time, and in perfect condition. I've never had any problem with them. I usually buy alot of manga at once, or with some DVDs and I always qualify for that free shipping if over $30 or something. I say just give them another chance, but if the situation is irking you that much, then by all means, do as you feel necessary to deal with their service.

The problem with Amazon is that a lot of times they do not differentiate volumes of manga, which I have complained to them a lot about. For example, instead of seeing Volume 4 of Mar as a distinct book in a series, they list all volumes of Mar under Volume 1, sometimes without the volume number in the title, or it is not even listed at all or the book has no entry unless you look under "different editions" and get lucky.
In replies to my complaints about their inconsistent and incomplete manga info, they replied that they see manga volumes as different editions of the same book. By different editions, like they have a ton of different editions of a classic novel like Oliver Twist, all of which contain the same text. So they do not view a title like Inuyasha as a book consisting of 30 something volumes. In their screwed up system, there is only one Inuyasha volume and the other 30 are just the same book with different covers. This would explain the problems anyone could have ordering manga from them. They also list the wrong reviews with the wrong volumes a lot so you might be getting a review for volume 3 when you're trying to find more information about volume 21. It comes down to pure freakin laziness on the part of Amazon. Barnes and Noble has no problem getting their information right and they list each volume as a distinct entity. So the second volume of Abenobashi was not there because you would have to click on "Different Editions", because to them, there is no difference between volume 1 and 2. This seems to be a bigger problem with lesser known manga and less of one with the more popular titles. |

I ordered some Clamp artbooks once that were to be released in January to be sent express the day they were released. I didn't get the books until March

thanks for all the replys, after looking at those websites im move inclined to go with rightstuf, because of their 7.50 per book period approach rather then "buy 4 get 1 free"
if anyone cares another problem im haveing with amazon is the books dont come in perfect condition.. maybe my expectations are to high (probaly are) but when i buy a book brand new i expect it to be perfect instead the amazon approach "shrinkwrap the books then send them in a box" tends to bend the corners of the book touching the shrink wrap.. putting the books between 2 pieces of card board then shrinkwraping would prevent that.. I've been told this info was forwarded to the shipping department for amazon but somehow i doubt anything will change. i also gave the suggestion of useing penuts.. they said they only do that for bigger orders or items that are more "breakable". LOL |

Rightstuf shrinkwraps their manga as well. But I've not received anything with bent corners. They wrap their product in brown packing paper as well as pad it with the paper...(that doesn't sound right)

As far as listing numbers for, Chapters used to not to that all the time, or they only ones they would list were for the Viz shoujo stuff that I was collecting where each volume had a distinct title (it's the only time I have ever liked those things, since usually they have nothing to do with anything). But now they're pretty consistent about listing the volume numbers, so maybe if people get on Border's case about it they'll see that their current situation is just rather dumb.

Just so you know Papa John, just because they're (Borders & Amazon) affiliated with each other doesn't mean they work together. As far as I know, my friend works at a Borders, basically the only affiliation and connection is that Borders uses Amazon.com as their primary website for ordering. In terms of actual selection Borders is much better, I think, than Barnes and Noble. The 2 B&N I've been to have had a good 1/3 less selection. The don't carry almost any mature titles at all, like Suzuka, Battle Vixens, Battle Royale, Pastel, Basalisk. Try actually ordering frm a Borders store and not online. You might also try local comic stores as they're carrying much more manga these days. They also, in my eexperience, can get titles quicker then big chains. Mine gives me discounts because I order so much through them. A local comic store might make you a deal to have the business. Check it out.

I actually haven't had issues with Amazon.com for Manga. It's always shipped right away. I'm not crazy about their search engine on the site. It is difficult to find the correct book sometimes but it's fine if I know exactly what I want.
I actually had an issue with Rightstuf once. I had ordered several books that were suppose to be in stock. It took a few emails and a few weeks later to finally get someone to tell me they were backordered and weren't going to be availble for another month. I ended up cancelling my order. I haven't used them since but I'd give them another shot if they had a good deal. For now I go to the Borders at the mall near my work. I pop in at lunchtime and get my Manga fix that way now. |
