I like how the person asking was shut down in such a professional manner.

Luckily this didn't happen at the showing in Ann Arbor I went to yesterday, though there were a couple of times where it looked like the bottom of the subs were clipped. That might have been my viewing angle though.

That was a very interesting and informative article. I have saved a link to it for future reference.
Thank you, Justin.

It's a legitimate question. Justin himself mentions several times that the format is arcane and often not well understood even by people who work with it; it's hardly fair to expect fans on the outside to understand how or why it could fail. It's a really cool read and I'm glad someone asked.

I totally agree this is a legit question and a great answer. But it is one of those things were you would think it wouldn't be that hard.

Today tons of subtitled content is delivered at hi-speeds to our homes with very few problems. You would think a big theaters could handle this, though yeah man that system sounds arcane and obnoxious to work with.

Thank you Justin for a really informative article, it's this sort of arcane information that I love to read about as it sheds some light on things we don't usually think about.

For some reason I had always assumed that theatrical digital projection systems had to adhere to pre planned specifications to try and prevent the sort of situation that seems to have cropped up.

Probably too late to swing it, but I would be in awe if Funimation worked "I've been waiting for this day!" into the packaging for the Blu-Ray. Maybe they can get it on the banner ads. It's a good meme; they might as well own it.

and I like how the person asking was merely seeking to understand. Glad they took the time to ask. Very interesting to learn a little of the technical details about this incident. And all in a nutshell no less.
Another informative Answerman.

So what exactly happened? Did this particular line stay on screen for the entire movie, was it just for a particular scene, etc. If it affected a particular scene, well that's one thing, but if it was for the remainder of the movie I could see that posing a problem.

Then again, this was such a niche market release, I'd hardly consider this to be a huge blemish to Funimation. Worse things have happened with Hollywood movie "subtitles" for foreign language scenes...

My understanding is it affected the entire movie after that point.

Presumably, the line would have stayed on screen for the rest of the movie. At the showing I attended, the movie kept playing for about 10 minutes while the theater staff worked on the issue. Then they stopped it for a while, rewound, and restarted it from the point where the glitch happened, and it played with no problems after that. Even though we (eventually) got to see the whole movie, they still gave us free passes for a future movie. Guess I'll use those for Part 2 in a few weeks Razz

Thanks for the informative article! I would have thought that digital projector systems would be easy and simple from a distribution and handling standpoint but I was clearly wrong. It's amazing that there isn't a more streamline standard for something like this.

It's already messed-up when they use Western order on Japanese names.
