This is primarily in response to the ERASED Advertorial/Guest Column, and comments made in the thread for it.

While I'm assuming it's an "advertorial" simply because he mentions you can get a CR trial, and plugs his youtube channel at the end, it's not really an "ad" for anything. Also, there's no byline on the article.

Other articles about streaming shows, whether "news" or "reviews" include links to the streaming sites (although they may not as blatantly mention the free premium trial), and regular columns and reviews often link to the author's website/twitter/whatever. So I don't see the difference in this and a regular column. I would be more comfortable with this labelled a "guest column," rather than an "ad."

I think the difference between whether something is labeled one versus the other is probably dependent on revenue. I.E. ads are paid to be hosted, where as guest editorials is the other way around.

As Lynzee said, the primary difference is revenue.

Zac Bertschy decides what editorial (including guest editorials) gets posted on the site and has little influence on the advertorials (as executive editor he has a bit of a veto over advertorials). Zac's end goal is always to create content that readers will appreciate.

Advertorials are paid for by the advertiser. Different advertisers take different routes, but their end goal is always promotion. Advertisers have zero influence on editorial.

It would be extremely improper for us to post the Erased article under any heading other than "advertorial." That said, the article was very well done, and is the kind of thing that Zac would have posted on the site. But the fact remains that we were paid to publish it, and therefore it is an advertisement and must be labelled a such.
