Very solid film!
I just saw it subtitled the other day.
Very decent story, lots of metamorphical images and mysticism.
If you don't care for art history, it's really not about that... I doubt it's based much on real history -- these kinds of films usually aren't. It's a much more personal story so even if you don't know Hokusai from Takahashi it's a good film to go see at a matinee.
You'll probably have to find an independent theater to see it. Fortunately, they have a VERY good theater that's good at getting the "Japanese stuff." They also have the exclusive exhibition of Shin-Godzilla in our area!
Too bad there's not so much talk about it.
It's an off-year without new Ghibli exhibitions or an EVA film, I guess...
It's mystifying to see why some of the GKids films haven't been picked up by other companies... They're pretty solid films whether we're talking about the Ghibli stuff Disney passed over the oddballs like this one, Patterna Inverted, and so on.
This one's definitely on my buy-list when it shows up.

I'm astonished about this, just as much as hearing the Cubs winning the World Series. Not bad for a film about two painters that are relatively obscure in the West. If these two get the exposure that they deserve, then that's alright with me.
