With their Blend S show this coming season, and now this the following one, it seems like A-1 is in the midst of a glut of moe shows. As a fan of some of them myself, I don't mind, but it's an interesting direction for them to take. Most of their work is, at most, tangentially moe prior to this.

Honestly as someone who also likes some moe shows I don't mind it, simply because well if I'm being blunt in my opinion A-1 isn't the best at animation often times. Fate Apocrypha is a pretty good example and is currently airing. The often lacking art and animation leads to unimpressive action scenes unfortunately. Plus the sound design of Fate/Apoc at least during action scenes is really grating on the ears, especially the sword clanking and general STEEL sounds. In general they're not the best studio at handling action, hence why I don't mind them doing things that require less animation like various Slice Of Life series. So their recent interest in moe styled slice of life is something I'm fine with.

^That's kind of a misunderstanding on how A-1 functions, to be honest. Other than their producers, they are entirely freelance, so it's unfair to say that they aren't good at any one aspect of production. It's not them really making it, it's freelancers who come from all over the industry. They do have some teams who work with them regularly, but they are not actually part of the studio, and for the record, some of them are fantastic at action! The team under Ishiguro who worked on things like Your Lie In April and Occultic;Nine, in particular, are very good at action and just good direction in general. And Ito's regular crew who work on things like SAO and Erased are also excellent. While action isn't his strength, Ishihama is a very strong atmospheric director as well. I haven't seen Apocrypha yet.. thanks Netflix.. but from what I've seen within the sakuga community is that it's not bad at all. It's a digital based approach to the series that hasn't been done before, but many of the scenes that I've seen are quite gorgeous. I am noting a disconnect between regular fandom and more hardcore production and sakuga fans though.

I am aware that they hire a lot of freelancers, but I'm simply saying I personally haven't cared for most the action focused series done under their umbrella/company name that I've seen. It's fine that your opinion differs from mine of course. I watched the first episode 24ish episode of Sword Art Online, I think visually SAO didn't look super impressive but the animation was I guess alright for it's time. Erased I thought looked very good visually but I wouldn't call that action more of a slice of life esq. murder mystery. Occultic;Nine is an anime I could only sit through a couple episodes of, from what I saw I didn't care for the art and animation, one key thing I couldn't stand was the angles and animation with most of the scenes that the character "Ryoka Narusawa" were in. Your Lie In April I haven't seen my self but I had heard good things, also from my understanding it's more slice of life esq. romance and not action? Hopefully I'm being respectful here, I'm only wanting to share my opinions and not put you or own opinions down. If you love A-1 studio anime in general then more power to you I say. There is an action focused series that I did like the art for actually "Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash", not always the best animation but the art is fantastic I think. Lastly when it comes to the Fate series I'm a very casual fan but Apocrypha and it's visuals simply weren't for me. However I'm glad that you're able to get enjoyment from what you've seen so far of the visuals.

You're being totally fine! You're right, I wouldn't call Erased or Your Lie In April action series. Occultic;Nine either, to be fair. I was more speaking to the talent of the people behind those series and specific scenes in those shows. Kyohei Ishiguro and Tomohiko Ito can direct/storyboard some really stellar action! And when they have the animation talent on top of that, like Kojima, Nishii, etc, their work looks even better(As far as I'm concerned, most of the time they do!). It's fine that you didn't like the way Occultic;Nine looked, but personally, I thought it was perhaps the second best looking anime to come out of 2016(for the record, I don't actually like the show, I just think it's very well-produced).
I'm not a particularly big fan of A-1 Pictures, but I don't really like putting down entire studios based on stuff that isn't really specific to them. It's usually better to think of animation production at the individual or team level, rather than at the studio level. There are few studios that are consistent enough to really be judged as a whole like that. Most are simply a door of rotating talent. Even looking at a Studio's past work oftentimes isn't a good indicator of what they can/will make. Smile
