I think i actually remember watching the first episode of this back when it was first coming out, and i recall my thoughts matching Nick's pretty closely. It was so nice to see traditionally animated robots fighting! And the fighting was pretty well done! It's just too bad that the story really didn't do much for me (even if it was only the first episode).

Edit: i STILL remember that one moment from the first episode, when the girl character is in robot form fighting that robot guy, and after she suddenly gets motivated to fight hard, she delivers this SICK series of punches, MMA-combination style, in amazing 2D animation, to the other robot, and it blew my friggin mind and gave me life the rest of the week

I would still rather take a mecha show with a bad story and well animated key-framed mechs, over one with a good story and 3DCG mechs.

This was pretty much my assessment of the show. The robots and fights were cool, even more so being hand-drawn, but the plot ended up being bland.

I remember this having nice Mech design and than forcing myself to watch it two episodes at time after came back from that self impose hiatus thing it had. Other than that I don't really remember anything about it

I haven't seen this show yet, but I might eventually check it out just for the sake of curiosity.

That said, I think we'll still see plenty of series with 2D mechanical animation. In fact, I believe the Code Geass sequel will probably use 2D, not 3D, if it's on TV. Mark my words, if you want to bet.

Yep. Accurate review. I actually liked the characters, but the story lost me about halfway through. I did enjoy the mech designs and fights though.

I've been meaning to get around to this for the mecha and overall artistry. I've always been a fan of the QP:Flappers character designers as well. It's a shame about everything else, but I'll take what I can get. I've managed to enjoy a few lame shows for about the same.

I certainly hope so, I am already disappointed by FMP

Didn't really know much about this, but I do enjoy giant robot spectacle. I guess I should check it out Smile

Huh? This really WAS a giant robot show? Wow, I guess I was mistaken. Confused

It's too bad about the story. I really should check it out though. At least to see the names of young animator talents.

I wonder. If the story had a more traditional approach (e. g. featuring hot blooded young men instead of cute girls) do you think things would turn out differently? You think the show would be more fun?

No. The characters themselves were perfectly fine. The problem is that the show did absolutely nothing interesting with them. It had plenty to work with, and it just figured "annoying kid bad guy needs to drive the plot" instead.

I prefer 2D, but I bet they use 3D for the sequel. If Sunrise used 3D for Akito the Exiled, why would they return to 2D.

This.

In fact, we RARELY get female leads or even princess leads as mecha pilots so I was disappointed they squandered such a great opportunity.

I was actually wondering if they'd figure out what to do if they had used traditional characters instead, but thanks for clarifying.

It really is a waste.
