I rewatched very recently and this just made the new series more disappointing.
There's no "connections" here, the correct words are "retroactive continuity". And about the "references", there's no creativity, just shameless rehashes of old episodes and scenes.
About the "themes"... what is he talking about?
It's sad, but this new season is just bad and uninteresting and "not very educative".
I wish I could know how Kodokawa execs made the decision to throw in the bin the golden goose they had accidentally found.

I didn't know that the BD was already out for you to see the results of the anime.

Six episodes are enough unless they're going to change everything at the last 3-4eps like the first season. Even so it's still less fun than most of the first season.
