And no, I don't mean a holiday FROM watching anime, I mean a holiday TO watch anime. I was just sitting here thinking how great it would be to take a week off sometime this winter (believe me, a Canadian winter is a great time to spend indoors) and basically just gorge on anime for nine days straight (five days off work bracketed by two weekends). I'm not sure I could actually tolerate watching that much anime in a concentrated period of time, but I wouldn't mind giving it a try. Bet I'd be able to chew off a good chunk of my anime backlog!

Anyway, I was just wondering if anybody has ever done something like this? I know egoist spent a week watching about 300 One Piece episodes (no, I'm not kidding). Tell me about your anime vacations if you've ever taken one.

I haven't done that but it sounds like a great idea. It would give me a chance to catch up on some stuff--I could finally tame the evil monkey in my closet (my backlog)!

Though it's not like I'd ever have an opportunity to do it anyway. It seems like whenever I get time off people invent stuff they want me to do for them. Mostly I'm just a weekend warrior, though I can't even do that nowadays thanks to football.

I'm guilty and it was worth it.

I did exactly what you're considering. I took 5 days off. However, mine was cushioned by a holiday weekend as well. So, I had one three day weekend, 5 weekdays, and then two more days. It was wonderful.

During that time, I ran a Magic Knight Rayearth Season 2 marathon, watched all of Card Captor Sakura for the fifth time and also finished off a few series I had one or two episodes remaining and still had enough time to go shopping. (yes, in spite of being an anime fanatic, I love shopping and wearing designer clothes.) It was a wonderful 10 days of bliss and relaxation.

That next week at work stretched on for an eternity, unfortunately. =( So, just consider some of the consequences of it. Going back to work for 5 straight days after that nice relaxation stretch doesn't just kinda suck - it sucks BIG TIME. If possible, give yourself that Monday off or take the Friday off of the week after your relaxation spree. That way, when you go back, at least you only have 4 days instead of 5. It's a little more bearable, in my opinion.

Bento-Box, you lived the dream! As much as I'd love to do it, it's not really practical for me right now. I get three weeks of paid vacation a year, but that includes having to use about 5 of those days for Christmas when the office shuts down. I use up a week in the summer, so that only leaves around 5 days for the rest of the year, and I tend to use the occasional vacation day to bulk up a long week or two. Oh well, I'm only about 20 years away from retirement...

Freshman year summer.

Not as fun as one might think. I'm pretty sure it wasn't that healthy to not leave the house. At all. Also dubious shower habits that I never want to repeat again. It was a dark, dark time.

Moderation is key. 3 months? Not so much. A Long weekend? Sure why not!

Sadface. Maybe you'll win the lottery? Anime hyper I'm rooting for you, Blood- !

You could always use two days and give yourself a prolonged weekend. Try to find a weekend with a holiday on a Monday or Friday and then take one day off at the beginning and one at the end.

I did that frequently as well, to maximize my time off. It's also easier to ease back into work after a short stint like that rather than over a week off.

I've done it a few times in the past. Only once was it during a whole week though (I marathoned Gurren Lagann then Twelve Kingdoms, each in 1 sitting, among other, smaller series). Usually if I get a 3+ day weekend, I spend one of those days marathoning a series.

I got a lot to catch up on too, I had to take about a year off of watching anime entirely cause I had an obnoxious jackass of a downstairs neighbor that thought his music was so awesome he would share it with the block. And it didn't help that my couch was directly above where he had his subwoofer.

Course, he's gone now, which may or may not have something to do with the fact that my sound system blows his out of the water and I have a large collection of the hardest of hardcore techno, which I was more than delighted to share with him when he got uppity.

Back on topic, I am looking forward to Thanksgiving weekend for that reason. I live within a half hour drive of all the family I have in this country, so we gather for Thanksgiving day, then I will have 3 full days to spend catching up on my backlog...

Holy ****. Well, I've never spent that much time watching anime straight, but this past Saturday I did just sit down and watch some of my anime DVDs, literally all day. My Anime collection isn't nearly as big as others though since I'm pretty oung, so maybe I'll waste away a week or so of my life one day when I get a bigger collection.

Back in September I had to take my vacation time from work or I'd lose it. I spent the two weeks pretty much doing nothing but watching anime on my free time when I wasn't at college. I completed at least 4 series from my backlog, Kurozuka, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu Pureza, and Princess Lover.

Well, being retired takes up all my time, so no holidays. I manage to make time for anime as needed. I spend more time on manga than anime though. The hard part is finding time to keep up with the forums here.

For my work circumstances, I don't get to have many days off (read: none) since me and my dad are the only actual laborers. Pretty much the only time when I don't have to work are national holidays, bad snowstorms, or bad weather in general, but other than that I'm always working. However, I only work 5, sometimes only 4, days a week and only about 4 hours a day, so it's not exactly painful.

When I do get one of those days off, though, it's spent watching anime, but that's not exactly different from what I usually do, so there's no thrill of being naughty.

I plan to request a few days off from work once the 7th episode of the Umineko visual novels are translated. So I can do nothing but play Umineko until it's over.

Not entirely anime, but related.

I have a brother and niece who live out of state, so I have to use much of my vacation time to either fly down to them or be home when they come up to my place. Once I add a sightseeing vacation once a year, I don't have the "vegetation days" I did before my brother moved. If I want to marathon a series that takes up more time than a weekend allows, that's pretty much limited to rare three-day weekend holidays on which I have no plans and the even rarer occasions when I get sick or a lousy enough cold to stay home. I enjoy the immersion when I do get the opportunity occasionally, but I do think it's best as a "special event" rather than a habit to avoid burnout.

Well during Christmas of 08 I Marathoned seasons 1-3 of Case Closed, and recently During my 3-day halloweekend I marathoned Trigun and parts of MSG 08th MS Team. But I can't say I've ever taken a day off just to stay home and watch anime.

This talk about taking a holiday off to watch anime suddenly reminded me of that Last Exile New Years marathon on G4TV at around 2006 I think. Does anyone else, remember that? I know I did, despite me being 16 years-old and not caring a lot for what Last Exile was at the time. Or the same thing with Toonami and their Naruto new years eve marathon?

Anyway, besides stuff like that on television, I never actually planned it on my own time to marathon anime on a holiday before. Besides, frankly I could never really sit still to watch a show all day without feeling the need to also do other stuff, regardless of what it was. Even if I felt I had nothing to do, I would still at the end of the day attempt to something other than just watching something all day.

It would be interesting though to try something like that, but it probably depends on the theme of the show(s) and the holiday itself. Like on Halloween for example, I would do a Soul Eater mini-marathon or do a Kanon marathon around the holidays or something. I would want to feel there's a beginning, middle, and end to a part of the story that I'm marathoning.
