Between this and Detective Pikachu doing pretty well in Japan, this makes me wonder why Alita wasn't a bigger success over there than it was. The only thing I can think of is maybe Alita is more popular in the West than in Japanese fandom but I don't really know much about how well known the manga is over there.

One clear difference (I couldn't say how important) is that Pokemon and Godzilla have both been releasing popular new material over recent years. Alita/Gunnm had a sequel manga that wrapped up in 2014, but nothing else recent. I read the reason is that James Cameron owns exclusive adaptation rights.
