Kemono Michi: Rise Up (TV) Genres: Comedy, Fantasy Themes: Animals, Wrestling Plot Summary:
-------------------------------------- Episode 1 One of the major mentions I am seeing of this series is that the original creator is the same as Konosuba, and I think that it totally shows through. Not like it is a complete copy, despite both being isekai, but there is some humour to it that just kind of feels similar. Like mention of who seems to be the main female character, a wolf girl called Shigure. She seems nice and stuff that she fits the role, but the fact she apparently she also seems a bit like trash that she was completely at fault for being sold into slavery for borrowing money, something about her just feels very similar to Aqua. But there is so much defining funny parts, from Genzou mentioned as a wrestler a bit too into animals. To the truly defining part where pretty much the first thing he did in the new world was perform a german Suplex on the princess that summoned him, because she tried to get him to fight beasts. Making the black market people run scared. To the giant ant sitting at the table all casual, Genzou apparently including it with Shigure having the same reaction I did of 'who is that?' I expectations are now really high, since I will be comparing it to Konosuba, one of my favourite anime comedies. |

Episode 2
Really funny that the ant person still has not been addressed, they have just joined the group and helping with the demon beasts. Genzo also attacking everyone who calls him a demon beast slayer, from clerks, to heroes, to guild boss. I guess a look at Shigure's funny side, pretty much out in the open stealing the sword of the strongest adventurer after he had been beaten, she seeming to have no shame about taking valuables if she can pass it off as not stealing, and trying to get rich, while not really seeming bad. Will also say that I kind of enjoyed the action of the wrestling with the orc. Do like their green skin and tusks over just the pig version you see in some series. Just felt like some fun there in putting wrestling with fantasy orcs. |

Episode 12 (finale)
I enjoyed the show, but also not a huge amount to have talked about as just something funny. I don't think that it as great as Konosuba, which it may draw comparisons of, but I do think it can be worthy to draw some contrasts to see what may not have worked. I talked with my brother about this series, and he took issue with the fact that this show had wrestling treated like it is a real serious thing, rather than a performative art that a lot of major stuff is not an actual fight, but planned. But in all honesty, I think it worked fine with the understanding that things worked off of wrestling logic, and imagine as just a world where it is real. I think that it is a good way to try and express the passion that a lot of people feel towards wrestling, so that even if you are not a big fan of in everyday entertainment, you can enjoy it here. Similarly, I think the big animal thing, or really monsters, was a fine concept and I think that Genzo was best when he was being totally unreasonable by any normal logic, unless you viewed things through his too into animals thing, and wrestling. Like Konosuba, its characters are best when completely unreasonable and kind of trash. Which is why I kind of think Carmila was actually the best character, comparable to Aqua, in this show, especially in getting into fights with Genzo, and otherwise so easy to look down on in drunkard state, or being creepily into her mistress, Hanako. I think some of my favourite parts were among Carmila pitifully rolling around in Hanako's clothes, sniffing them with a dumb look on her face. Even though I think Carmila was meant to be the Darkness of the group. Hanako as the resident young looking member of the group, and an appetite, makes her feel reminiscent of Megumin, also as a kind of ace from being super strong. But really mostly only had one running joke in terms of wanting to always eat, including many monsters, regardless of what might seem palatable. I think that it worked sometimes, and could be funny, but I don't think enough was done with her, like she lacks any real fear because she is a full on dragon. Similarly, I think Shigure was the most overlooked, that she mostly seemed to be given the role of the straight man, with only taking the latest sword to sell that someone "left behind", it was the only time she was allowed to be unreasonable and awful. She was introduced by having gotten in trouble for her own unreasonable love of money in having signed a contract for a lot of money, and somehow losing it, but then she becomes the one responsible for spending habits. Kind of feels like she could have been improved by being more of a swindler who keeps getting in over her head with a new financial opportunity and doing something hasty, instead of it always someone else's fault. Even Kazuma has his trash moments. I still kind of like Shigure as a character, she has plenty of aspect that land with me, but its kind of the other end of the scale where I think the stuff that worked best with the show when things like Carmila's trashiness. The princess also kind of turned into like Darkness in the end, being masochistic in enjoying being shamed. She also felt like another character that took too long to find a footing. Anyway, rating the show, I will go with Good (7/10), it is worth watching, but I think there are areas that could be improved. |
