40,000 dolls a year sounds a lot for a craft that strikes me as something that took a lot of care and thought. Maybe it includes simpler dolls like kokeshi dolls?

That's over 100 dolls a day... Even with simple dolls, that a lot of dolls. That's factory level, not craft level production.
