The way Richard and Buckingham’s relationship begins leaves a bad taste. I think a lot of stories that take place in similar settings have the main character spoiler[fall in love with their rapist]. I ended up just accepting the trope and appreciated how the show developed its characters. Even though I was weirded out by their relationship initially spoiler[Richard executing Buckingham] hit me hard. I think the only moment that made me cry even more was Richard’s final confrontation with his mother.

There are also far too few ride or dies in anime on the same level as Catesby.

The article claims that Joan of Arc's "actions were unfeminine by [15th century] understanding", which isn't true. She said at her trial that she didn't fight, carrying her banner in battle instead; and the military records and eyewitness accounts show that she didn't directly lead. Her soldier's clothing and armor were given to her by the soldiers who escorted her to Chinon and then by the Royal government etc, for practical reasons. Eyewitnesses described her as very feminine. It was only pro-English partisans (especially the pro-English collaborators who put her on trial) who tried to make a big issue out of all this, because they had nothing else to charge her with. Her own side just viewed it as a practical necessity (you can't ride a horse for hours each day without long cavalry boots to protect the legs from abrasion, and you can't remain safely on a battlefield without armor to protect against arrows).

No, that's what the author of the original manga, Aya Kanno, said, if you click the linked interview. It's how Kanno viewed her, which in turn informs the anime's interpretation of the character.

As someone who is slooooowly winding my way through Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc by Mark Twain, I honestly wasn’t super sure if this series was going to be for me because I’m more of a casual Shakespeare fan, but ironically this sounds like it takes so many liberties that I’m actually better off being just a good ol’ history buff instead! I may opt for the manga though; Kanno’s art is a particular favorite of mine.

I ended up dropping this one after all, not because of the visuals, or the writing, or even the historical liberties, but because it really, really started to grate on me how Richard's entire internal struggle was starting to conflate "gender" and "sexuality." It was tolerable in the first cours when I could write that off as "historical accuracy" (with bemused sarcasm quotes), but then the series went into it way harder than I had expected. I know. I was warned. (Like, I get that the Japanese use the English loanword "gender," and sometimes even "transgender," as something of a catch-all for LGBT+ in general, but still. Maybe my own internalized definition of "man" really just is too inclusive and I need to learn to be more judgemental. I dunno.)

I should probably go back to it for the history, now that it's wrapped and apparently ends well-ish. (This series provided the one opportunity I've ever had in my life to discuss seasonal anime with my mother, the world's hugest WotR nerd. She also speculates that Henry was behind what happened to the princes in the tower, on account of Richard not having a motive.)

What does it take to get lower than a C in animation?

Cour 1 was great, but the romance with Buckingham really dragged this series down. I couldn't take Richard whining and worrying about Buckingham every week. It made him seem like such a shallow character. It seemed to come out of nowhere and didn't lead to much.

Plus they brought Henry back and didn't utilize him at all. Richard and Henry's romance didn't go anywhere. What was the point? Should have just left him dead if that was the case.

Something like this, I suppose?

I was never quite fully on-board the Richard-Buckingham thing and was flabbergasted at certain... choices made with regards to their relationship, but still Buckingham's execution hit so hard. Same with the goodbye scene with Richard's mother, a character I had wanted to see less of from the first moment she appeared on-screen.

Even with almost non-existent animation, it is quite something that they managed to communicate that genuine feeling of losing what little "happiness" (not quite happiness, but whatever you cling to to stay alive) you have. It's the numbing sort of sadness, not the stormy heart-wrenching grief I'd come to expect from other dramas. Though this is hardly something I'd call stellar, this will likely stay with me for quite some time unlike the 30+ other shows I'd probably end up watching this year. It's a shame that I can't quite recommend this anime so freely -- I can't ask others to sit through the poor visuals and rushed storytelling on top of the questionable stuff, just for that catharsis in the last 2 or 3 episodes.
