On one hand, I'm glad the Haikyu!! anime will have an ending, but on the other one, I really wish they made a fifth season and then two movies instead. There's too much material left to adapt, and it will be a shame to see them rush through it.

Not gonna lie, I laughed when I saw this announcement on twitter. Since the spoiler[time skip arc (this arc was just so bleh)], to me, Haikyuu has been a major disappointment. The OVAs that featured the Tokyo matches cut out a lot of content, season 4 had wonky animation and more cut content, and now they're turning the last 100-something chapters into two movies? Yeah. I expect a lot of be cut. spoiler[I won't be surprised if the Fukurodani/Mujinazaka match will be cut completely.] The Karasuno/Nekoma match should be its own season or spoiler[ paired with the Fukurodani/Mujinazaka match and then Kamomedai and the time skip arc for season 6 or something that isn't two movies for everything. The time skip arc as a movie could work with how fast-paced it is.] I'll watch the movies because this is the end, but I won't be surprised if they're also a disappointment.

However, I am super excited for more Engeki Haikyuu! Suga Kenta is so passionate about it, I'm sure it's going to be amazing!

Yea I really don't know how they're going to divide this up satisfactorily. It feels like you either try and cram spoiler[Nekoma and Kamomedai] into one film (honestly I would not be surprised if they just ignore spoiler[Fukurodani vs Mujinazaka] entirely whatever they do) or, the frankly more likely option, you leave spoiler[Kamomedai] for the second film and stuff in the spoiler[beach/Jackals] stuff at the end. Either way I feel like none of it will get the attention it deserves. Sad

I'm expecting they'll plain not have the more Epilogue-y stuff in the movies, with just each match being its own movie entry. Sad because I really wanted to see spoiler[them going to Brazil unironically]

I'm kinda disappointed to hear that they'll be adapting the rest of the manga in 2 movies. I've never read the manga sticking mostly with just the anime but now it feels like I'll have to check the manga now otherwise I might miss out on some good content. Crying or Very sad

I was hoping we'd get a final season with a 2-cour or enough episodes to cover the rest of the manga, but I'm concerned with how much they might cut between two movies.

spoiler[But yeah, I'm guessing the first movie will be the Nekoma match and the second will be the Kamomedai match.]

I’m…Worried. On one hand, I’m always happy for more HQ content and I bet it’ll look amazing.

But, like everyone else on this thread and on Twitter, I’m really disappointed. There’s going to be a lot of content cut. A lot. Even Japanese fans are expressing concerns on how this will be handled.

I’m not exactly the biggest fan of adapting arcs into movies rather than seasonal anime (looking at you, Quintessential Quints.) Did studios look at the success of Mugen Train and go “…We can do that.”

But say if the movies are a MUST- then I would prefer if it was going to be the rest of nationals in one anime season and then spoiler[the Brazil arc and Adlers vs Jackals in two separate movies.] I don’t want to lose all that character growth and exploration we get in the remainder of nationals (especially for non-Karasunos like Bokuto and Akaashi.)

But my concerns don’t really matter. They’re not going to change their minds on this project. As fans, all we can do is cross our fingers and hope.

Exactly what they think. The Production Committee is not going to look at the 100+ chapters and be like how can we make a good adaptation from this? They are going to think how can we make a lot of money out of this? Mugen Train made a boat load of money and it was a movie, so we are going to do a movie.

I am really hating this new trend of turning canonical stories into movies

I have to say I'm disappointed. The most recent anime season left off in the middle of volume 33, and there are 45 volumes total. There's a total of 112 chapters left to adapt, which is way too much material to cram into just two movies! I was hoping we'd get one or two more seasons of the TV series to really do it justice. Instead it looks like they're rushing this franchise out the door.

I'm not a fan of this current trend where concluded manga get rushed endings. The way they treated Promised Neverland still ticks me off. Contrast that with how Demon Slayer continues to be be a huge success despite the manga having ended two years ago, and you see the value of slowing down and adapting things properly.

Edit:

Actually, this is a good point. Seems like they are learning from Demon Slayer, but taking the wrong lessons from it. Hm.

Much like everyone else, I would have much preferred this be a full 2-cour length season, or 2 seasons for that matter. But then again the last arc of the manga is a huge letdown so I'm curious to see how it gets adapted, hopefully shit changes there.

It come later, but I'm glad to see that folks here aren't brainlessly blaming Demon Slayer and Jujutsu no Kaisen for what is apparently a super duper new trend that oh-so totally isn't at all common for canon anime movies.

Edit: Guess I wrong. People are saying the same stupid rhetoric about Demon Slayer, all the while forgetting about the previous canon anime movies that made a shit load of money. Demon Slayer came out in 2020.

Here's a list of anime movies that made a shit load of money a year before that

1 . "Weathering With You" - 14.06 billion yen

2 . "Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire" - 9.37 billion yen

3. "Kingdom" - 5.73 billion yen

4. "ONE PIECE STAMPEDE" - 5.55 billion yen

5. "Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of the Moon Exploration" - 5.02 billion yen

7. "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" - 4 billion yen

8. "Tonde Saitama" - 3.76 billion yen

10. "Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution" - 2.98 billion yen

13. "Kaguya-sama: Love Is War" - 2.24 billion yen

15. "Crayon Shin-chan Honeymoon Hurricane -The Lost Hiroshi-" - 2.08 billion yen

16. "The Great War of Archimedes" - 1.93 billion yen

17. "Uta no Prince-sama The Movie: Maji LOVE Kingdom" - 1.82 billion yen

18. "The Fable" - 1.77 billion yen

19. "Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel]」Ⅱ.lost butterfly" - 1.66 billion yen

22. "City Hunter The Movie: Sjinjuku Private Eyes" - 1.53 billion yen

I think you’re misunderstanding what fans are concerned about.

The difference between all the movies you listed are: (1) Some of these are original stories and movie only, (2) most of the ones that are associated with established franchises are not based on anything from canon material or are meant to be compilations/provide a full conclusion to the story/act as a side story, and (3) Mugen Train is more being criticized for how it might be encouraging using movies rather than an already existing anime to show material from the manga that MUST be seen.

The movie making a ton of money and being popular isn’t the issue, it’s the possible method of adaption it’s encouraging.

The benefit of the JJK movie is that it’s a prologue. You don’t really have to watch it, but it would help provide backstory for what happens later on. Just like the manga chapters they were based on.

The benefit of movies like say Naruto: The Last is that you don’t necessarily have to watch it after you finish the anime or before you watch Boruto. But it would help in getting to understand the romance between Naruto and Hinata, since that barely attention in the main story.

Arguably, Mugen Train is the RIGHT way to adapt a necessary piece of a story into a movie. Because the manga chapters of that arc aren’t a lot. The pacing for Mugen Train actually made more sense for a movie. And for now, they’re going to be continuing the future arcs as an anime.

The problem with doing this for Haikyuu is that they’re not doing just one arc. They’re going from where they left off in S4 to the finale. That’s over 100 chapters to adapt. People would be happy with a movie, the concern is what they’re sacrificing to make these movies happen. Fans just don’t want a sloppy adaptation.

And, sadly, most of us will look at Mugen Train and think “other anime studios really want to catch that lightning in a bottle twice, huh?”

Disappointing news, I'm more than ticked off that this is how they're finishing the series. I'd have much preferred two more seasons with each having 25 episodes. It's obvious they're going to either really rush or cut out alot of content. The manga was amazing and deserves the full treatment and we the fans who have followed all the way through and bought all the series also deserve the right ending.

I'll definitely watch these films but my excitement for what's coming up has definitely been diminished. Very poor decision.

My guess is because Covid-19 screwed things up and they had to cut budgets? Also at least I won't have to rush and be able to watch/read it to at my own pace
