I think you covered just about everything I like and dislike about this series. The hairstyles thing surprisingly hasn't kept me from telling the characters apart, mostly, though the plethora of sea-urchin afros is just weird. Also, usually DAs are a character defining trait, like Umemiya's pomp in Ace of Diamond, but here half the characters are sporting them for no apparent reason.
Speaking of AoD, Aoashi hits all the same story beats except it's soccer. The recruited, diamond-in-the-rough prodigy, the coaches who won't teach him anything, the switch-off from desired position (starting pitcher) to a "lesser" role (reliever, and later batting practice pitcher), the cluelessness about the girls who fancy him, the breakthrough moments, the rivalries from his own teammates - it's all in there, just shuffled around a bit. Reliance on these tropes is a feature of many sports anime, but these two do seem to be remarkably parallel.
I also really liked the low-key way the romance side of things progressed. Nobody's done it better than Baby Steps' relationship, but this is a nice second place. I do hope we get some more of this series (also wish Baby Steps would pick up again, since apparently a decade or three isn't a death sentence anymore).
