And word has it that at GDC various developers were asking each other if their respective publishers were sending them to E3. The most most common answer was that they hadn't heard yet.

I heard that Ubisoft won't show up at E3. E3 seems to be a major gaming casualty of the pandemic

Man I remember years ago I would always anticipate E3 it’s kinda sad to see how far it has fallen. With Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo doing their own events now I could see why people lost interest in E3.

E3 was dying before the pandemic, like around 2009, it started dying.

E3 has announced that any developers who still show up will be given an extra hour in the ball pit.

People try and justify by saying that it died decades ago, but all I know is that in 2013 and 2014 and 2015 and so on, those years were fantastic, we had live shows along with all the announcements and information, interviews, the show floor was always busy. Then around 2017 i believe is when it really started failing. At first they explained it was because the market was not a cost worthy investment and the entertainment medium gradually shifted to digital platforms and streaming started to really become the new wave of gaming. At this point no one really cared about life shows any more they just wanted there gaming news. Then of course the pandamic hit and that coupled with the major shift in global video game distribution from stage shows and live presentations to digital platforms is ultimatly I think what caused E3 to die.

E3's peak to me was 2014. The announcement of the PS4 and the whole debacle with Microsoft and the Xboxone. That was the last time it felt truly eventful.

The fact that they couldn't get it together despite it being three months before the event shows that there was nonsense happening behind the scenes. What the hell was going on?

Anyone who announces attendance this week will get a round of combat above the intel/ lenovo foam pit.

Yup. It's been a long, slow, decline, and I personally don't think the industry is better for it.

Again, it's sad because these digital showcases have been absolutely lackluster and misunderstanding why Directs were even good. There's merit in doing public showcases and in person conferences, but now that Geoff Keighley will have a live event component to Summer Game Fest, it is what it is.

And the pandemic sped up the decline even further. It hasn't been hosted since the pandemic began.
