I've played it a bit on my Steam Deck, and it takes place after the original Utawarerumono, but before the sequel series. The main character in this game appears in the sequel series, but I won't go into details about it due to spoilers.

Well, prequel of Mask of Deception/Truth games, but not of the original Utawarerurmono. You play as a young adult-aged Oshtor and see a good amount of some of the Eight Pillars and some other familiar faces as well.

seeing they stopped doing the 18+ VN makes me sad - not that the original h scenes were any good(they were not) but I bet this is to cater to the other so-called puritan countries, the ones who don't just want to censor their own borders, but also the world, and companies are towing the line
