R-15 (TV)

Genres: comedy, erotica, romance
Themes: censored, ecchi, fanservice, harem, school

Plot Summary: Takuto Akutagawa has a special ability for writing porn novels. He applies to Hirameki Gakuen, a high school which only accepts people with "unique" talent. Now he must chase his dream and direct his classmates to win an interclass competition—all while trying to create the prefect harem.
----------------------------------

Ok, so this R-15 thing is now up on CR. Episode 1.

First, is it worth watching with all the censorship?

Second, is it worth watching without all the censorship?

If you don't mind your intelligence being insulted, you will probably like this. If you don't mind being worked over like a carnival mark, you will probably like this. If you like to listen to rambling dirty jokes and then have the punch line left out, you will probably like this.

The artwork is pretty good. I'm not crazy about the character designs.

I have a rule not to give up on a series for at least 3 episodes, but this may very well break it. What do you think?

The above assertions answer all of your questions.

Was for the most part crap, I liked a few of the female characters (photographer girl mostly) but she'll be shafted to the side for the boring main female character anyway. Maybe the main girl is awesome.. but if that's the case, show us that in the first episode since people like me who will drop this after 1 ep will never find out.

Worst first episode I've seen since Prism Ark.

The lead at one point dreams he wins what's translated as the "Tokyo Governor's Prize." I don't know exactly what this prize is, but the idea of Ishihara shaking someone's hand for writing erotica is pretty funny, so I'll just pretend that's what it means.

What made you feel like your intelligence was being insulted? A dumb show is a dumb show, it only insults your intelligence if it's trying to trick you into thinking it isn't one. Did R15 ever pretend to be something it wasn't, or are you talking about something else?

This show seems to be a new addition to the recent line of awful, lazy harem shows that think if they can throw as many archetypal girls at the viewer as fast as they can, then they can garner viewers. Seriously, in order for a harem show to be likable beyond its usual purposes, they need to have likable characters. I'm not necessarily saying these girls aren't likable, but that we have no clue whether or not they're likable because there are way too many and are given way too little time. Usually, harem shows would top out around 5 girls; some go up a little further to like 7, but the number is kept a single digit. Plus, they gradually introduce us to them. First episode would introduce 1 or 2, usually the main female interest plus the childhood friend, and the other girls would be brought in in later episodes mostly 1 at a time in a self-focused episode. This way, the audience doesn't get overwhelmed and has enough time to get to know each of the girls. I mean, as bland and unwatchable as that Starry Skies show was, it at least understood this. R15 though, sheesh! Too many at once! I can't even remember any of them by name. There's been a number of these types of trainwrecks over the past couple of years, and all of them have been unwatchable.

Oh, and call me a prude (HA!), but I just don't find rape jokes funny.

Well let me put it this way. I felt like the retarded/autistic kid sent to a special needs school where the planned activities were so stupid even I would not participate.

Episode 2 arrived and I sort of wish it hadn't.

Not because it was worse than Episode 1. Instead Episode 2 is significantly better. What's worse is that their ecchi schtick has actually set a significantly challenging goal for itself.

When you have characters with super-powers, it manifests in anime generally as drawable things like shooting weapons, martial arts, performing magic, or perhaps mastering tests or videogames or something. I haven't really seen before where the super-power turns out to being able to write words so poetic an powerful that it causes the seemingly insurmountable to happen. In this case erotic writing.

So the task R15 has set up for itself is to have have a script where Takuto reads out his writing that is so "good" in some way that it resolves the problem. Episode 2's "plot" (such as it is) attempted to do that and although I did not find it very convincing, it somehow wasn't totally flat either. So will they be able to make it happen for the next 10 or so episodes? I seriously doubt it but you have to respect them for trying, assuming they do.

The censorship is still incredibly annoying, but I doubt it is going to make me buy the BD unless something really special happens later.

I'd definitely agree that ep2 was much better, and it looks like the show has an actual purpose now.

I am curious, though, how the censorship issue is going to work for this getting released over here. I mean, the story is about genius kids in high school, and half the characters getting censored are under 18 by that definition. Are they just going to retranslate it as a "genius college", and claim everyone in the show is over 18? Otherwise, I don't see how this could ever see a US release in its uncensored format.

Simple. It's a cartoon with non-pornographic(assuming the censoring is just covering nipples and groping) sex and this US is not Canada.

Plus cartoon porn is legal in the US provided the viewer is 18 or over.

Made even funnier by the fact that prior to his political career, Ishihara wrote erotic books for a living,I kid you not.

As for the show, man that first episode was... boring. Even more than shows that have a first episode were nothing in particular happens, I cant stand shows were things happen but absolutely nothing that happens ever turns into an actual decent viewer hook. Quite a few shows have been guilty of that this season, R15 being one of them. Maybe ill continue it if I get bored, but thats not all that likley.

She's the creepiest character next to the main guy.

Nope -- with episode 3 she passed him. Publicly posting misleading candid photos just to be nasty. She is the one the teacher should have been talking about punishing.

I dunno, with episode 4, spoiler[the main character triggers her to look at her naked body and call herself ugly... and this is seen as some kind of cathartic triumph.] Wait, really? I mean, I know anime can be sexist but... seriously? I must have watched that scene wrong. There couldn't be an entertainment professional in an industrialized nation in 2011 who gave that the okay, could there?

Oh, believe me, if there's an entertainment professional in an industrialized nation in 2011 who greenlit horrible shit like Manyuu Hikenchou, Mayo Chiki, Astarotte's Toy, I Don't Like You At All Big Brother, and yet more seasons and OVAs of Queen's Blade and Kodomo no Jikan, there's someone who seriously gave this the okay.

It's not a matter of whether it's horrible shit or not. I'm one of the last people in the world who would complain about the shows you listed. There's a difference between gratuitous sex and nudity played for comedic or titillating effect, which is really just an expression of disturbingly honest capitalism, and giving the "victorious catharsis" context to the language of high school body image disorders.
