I don't disagree with the notion of focusing on the core relationship of Echika and Harold...but then why skip adapting the first novel which is a massive component of their relationship and getting audiences' invested in them?

I wonder if part of the reason they cast Kana Hanazawa and Kensho Ono as the leads is because they were relying on their relationship as a married couple to help sell the chemistry in the absence of the material that built it up.

“In reality, I think that by making the theme about the relationship between two people, the anime became much easier to trim down—and in the end, I think it came together well,”

“I feel that we put the anime together using the bare minimum of sci-fi elements. So, looking at the final result, we focused on depicting the relationship between two people rather than explaining sci-fi terminology at length. We've reached a point where I think this will be enough to convey the content of the work.”

I'm sorry but as a LN reader all I can say is "HUH?!?!". Like, you say this is about the relationship between the two main leads but then decide to skip Volume 1 which is essential to establishing their relationship? How does that even work?

This is such a dumb reason. The voice actors can only do so much with the material they were given and they certainly can't save a script that was flawed to begin with. Also, Kana Hanazawa and Kensho Ono previously lent their voices to the LN PV so they were simply reprising their roles for the anime.

I'm still confused as to what their thought process was regarding that. Like I get them wanting to focus on their drama, but where in that did "We have to skip the first volume" come into the picture even though that's where most of that development happened.

Was this Ozaki's decision? One of the writers? The original author's? Twin Engine's? I would love to know how "Focus on the characters" translated to "exercise the first volume completely". The fact the interview didn't explain that much makes me wonder if even they know why they cut out the volume.
