That's really selling the series (and the MC) short. It's actually a pretty adorable and fun romcom about childhood friends.

My guess: both of you are correct.
1. This does not appear to the same old harem/romcom show with a bland passive self-insert MC. Instead we get one of the extremely rare modern anime romcom MCs that is proactive on improving himself and pursuing romance as opposed to a flat character who is led around by the nose by the much stronger and more assertive female characters. This looks like a rarity along the lines of Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki and Oresuki, including the MC having real character flaws that need to be dealt with.
2. This IS, however, another generic romcom MC design. Take Rumiko Takahashi: her 3 most famous romcoms Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku and Ranma ½ all ran in the same general time period (including all overlapping with One Pound Gospel in 1987!) yet Ataru, Yusaku and Ranma looked nothing like each other, and this was with 2 of them having dark brown hair. The same is true of Masaki Kajishima: his harem MCs Tenchi, Kazuki and Photon were not at all similar. Takahash, Kajishima and their contemporaries designed their main male characters to fit their traits. That doesn't seem to be happening a lot these days.

Second, I am really enjoying the series so far—it’s a feel-good series with clichés done right. Think Kaguya sama love is war but the protagonists are so wholesome.

Not to be redundant following the other replies, but I’ve heard this is one of the genuinely good ones. This isn’t the next Rent-a-Girlfriend.

Rent-A-Girlfriend is one of those mysteries: "everyone" claims to hate it but it is massively popular. Can't do the "big only in Japan thing either: it is clearly a top 5 modern romcom franchise on Myanimelist.
But for the purpose of this conversation, the irony is that its MC's not being "generic modern romcom mc no. 1008" is the main reason why Rent-A-Girlfriend is hated so much.
In addition to not being generic-looking (light brown hair instead of the standard audience self insert black) he is a 20 year old college student instead of the usual high school junior and rather than being "average but vaguely likable" has massive character flaws that everyone finds unforgivable (despite his having legitimate reasons for being the way that he is and several of the haremettes being even worse).

Omg thank you!! Best news ever^^ I love love love the series so much. A very sweet rom-com full of romantic tension.. I live for Yukiya and Miku's daily dose of flirtation. I hope a very nice studio is adapting the series. I'm so ecstatic! I can't wait to see them on screen..
