Golly, some of that description sure sounds like a recently broadcasted anime.

Well, I guess you could consider Kudou-san an "S-Rank" given recent developments in Kowloon Generic Romance. And Reiko is sort of like a naive, very supportive person...but honestly, I think you're stretching it, Smurky
But yeah, the "Kicked out of my party" and the "Villainess" anime have really exploded as their own genres in the last several years. That said, I still enjoy the genres unless they're so substandard or soulless that mid-tier is just a distant dream. |

And the Originality Prize goes to... not this! I'll check it out but unless it falls into the "not great, but heck I'm enjoying it anyway" category, it'll likely be a drop.

Not great, but heck, I'm enjoying it anyway.
Of course, mileage varies. To me, shows like this and the villainess shows are like eating french fries at this point. The same old same old gets boring, but I like the basic formula enough that I can keep snacking with just a few minor adjustments to give a little variety as long as the fries aren't cold or soggy or bland. Curly fries? Huh. Waffle fries? The texture's not bad. Steak fries? Cool. Hot fries? What the hell are hot fries. Sea salt? Interesting. This anime at least has some internal logic and development going for it. The MC's inferiority complex was drilled into him intentionally over time by an S Rank using B.F. Skinner methods. His mentor had a reason rooted in trauma for it too. The "Hero" is a douche, but the MC was being so covert that its understandable that his contributions were being undervalued, and obviously the "Hero" doesn't want a competent dude hanging around messing up his harem. |

It is an okay enough first episode and likely an okay enough show. It being okay and having many elements that have been shown a hundred times before make me tap out though, the season is honestly so busy that okay is not enough unless there is some unique hook.

Episode 1
I kinda dug. Yeah, so far it is definitely falling into the "not great, but I'm enjoying it anyway" folder. Emotional simpleton that I am, I am looking forward to his old party finding out what his absence will mean. |

I have already dropped a few shows given how busy this season is but it seems I am still a sucker when it comes to not dropping fantasy shows. That said, I had a good enough time this week despite the second episode basically consisting of Lloyd flexing the entire time and the animation being okayish. I wonder if we will see the hero party start floundering next week.

Episode 2
I've got this one in the same folder as Outcast Restaurant: not doing anything amazing but giving me something I enjoy watching. I'm looking forward to the inevitable episode where we check in with Lloyd's old party as they come to realize what they've gotten rid of. |

I offloaded Outcast Restaurant myself, but I do set this one alongside New Saga for pretty much the same reasons you listed even though New Saga isn't a post party anime.
I enjoyed this episode for exactly what it was with nary an eyebrow twitch, which isn't something I can say for most of the "Kicked out of the Hero's Party" anime that have come avalanching down in recent years. Who knew that when Banished From the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside first debuted, that relatively quiet, unassuming anime was the herald of a partypocalypse? I like that they took the time to give Klum (what a name) a decent send-off while also giving Lloyd a solid start in his new party. That's some pretty deft multi-tasking. It was a decent blend of action, character interaction, and plot progression. I'm also looking forward to seeing the hero's party get some reckoning even if it is totes predictable. And I'm a little curious about whether the blonde paladin is going to wind up joining Lloyd's new party or what. I do hope that the show provides at least some variations from the Hero comes back to recruit Lloyd, Hero makes pact with demonic force after being rejected motif though. For example, one variable in all of this is that Lloyd has a master who is apparently a living legend. I don't recall seeing that in any of the other party pooper anime. |

Actually, I was thinking of New Saga when I cited Outcast, but for me, all three shows are in the same category. Nothing special but enjoyable watches.

Episode 3 offered some adventuring and Lloyd bonding with his new party. Although competent and entertaining enough (excluding some animation woes) I am honestly struggling to mention anything of note, the show right now tastes like a bland soup, there is no spice to be found.

With shows on this level, it all comes down to what's in your zone. If this were a CGDCT or a sports anime or a mecha, I'd be dropping it. But it's fantasy, and honestly it's enough for me that's it's reasonably well done and not as annoying as a lot of these types of anime are.
For example, when the tank gave him the small pouch of money, he didn't act like it was a big deal and neither did the anime. It was just basic fairness and common sense, and that seemed to resonate more effectively. Or for another example, I like it that the support mage isn't so OP that everyone else is basically useless and reduced to standing around going "Ooh, you're awesome!" Normally, he'd be the only one who can do storage magic and it would be some mythical ability, but here he teaches everyone else to do it. The rest of the party had a role to play as well. I even thought when the leader's towel dropped and the scene didn't end with a loud smacking sound, "Oh, she didn't slap him even though it totally wasn't his fault, that's kind of refreshing." And then as the next scene came into focus they showed him with a hand print on his face. So the animation isn't anything special, and it's not particularly original and I acknowledge all that. I'm watching it while dropping other shows of the same or maybe even slightly higher level, and I acknowledge that as well. But I like it well enough. Sometimes you just crave a bowl of bland soup. You quickly forget about it once done with it but it is a filling enough meal. Looking at my to watch list I also dropped a few shows above this one quality wise, it all comes down to preference and being in the mood for something.
Plus, this one is pretty innocent which I like in a season with quite a few dark/grim shows. |

"Beyond those treacherous peaks lies the Magic Kingdom. Though they're keeping to themselves now, they'll eventually swarm out to dominate the entire continent."
I knew it! Disneyland is the realm of demons! And he's not wrong about swarming out to dominate the entire continent, nay, the world. I have a soft spot for these stories, but man, could they have dragged their feet on this any harder? So much of the dialog and details felt more like padding than character development, and nothing toward plot development at all. Like, it was nice hearing more about his master, but I didn't really need all the details of their strategy meeting that still just amounted to the most basic of example strategies you could find in any starter rpg pack. "I'll draw aggro, the attackers will attack, the healer will heal, the supporter will support. Is everyone clear on their roles in carrying out this complex strategy that we've apparently never done together before?" "Ooh, this suspension bridge is super scary!! Let's play stupid games to get over it and deepen our camaraderie!" "There aren't any monsters here." Except for that giant basilisk that attacked us out of nowhere today, you mean? So while I still like the characters and that it's not entirely the Lloyd Show, and I'm not thinking about dropping it, I really hope they pick up the pace a bit going forward, or it's going to become a real slog. @smurky: funny you should mention bland soup. I just watched episode 3 of Fermat's Cuisine (which I'm liking a lot), and learned all sorts of stuff about kinds of umami. One of the dishes was a sort of rice soup, or rather rice with an umami-rich tea or dashi broth poured over it (still looks like soup) and topped with stuff, called ochazuki. This series isn't quite up to ochazuki standards of comfort food, but it's still edible. |
