Would Dark Horse hypothetically be able to publish a graphic novel adaptation of The Lord of the Rings? Or would they also need the authorization of the Tolkien Estate?
I image that Dark Horse would be able to adapt The War of the Rohirrim, but I'm not sure that would be worthwhile unless the story could be fleshed out a bit.

Possible I suppose but unlikely. Is there any market for this sort of thing? The Dirty Pair franchise is rather limited in demand. The US comics are pretty much unknown except to a very few. If there were a market I would have expected Viz to reissue their comics based on screen shots of the anime.
Regardless, Dark Horse appears to be in bad health ever since Disney bought Lucas Films and transferred the Star Wars franchise to Marvel. Being bought and sold as frequently as they have is not a good sign.

That said, Dark Horse is still publishing their own line of Star Wars comics. And there seems to be something in the works that will be revealed at SDCC, possibly related to The Lord of the Rings. Dark Horse seems to be in reasonably good shape right now.

I was just being hopeful as this year is the 40th anniversary of the series
