I'm rooting for this one not because the fall 2025 season has any lack of romantic comedies, and not because the plot sounds like anything special, but just because the art in the trailer was well done and suffused with that light effect - as if the drawings were held over a spotlight - that is cheerful to observe. And, I happened to see a similarly glowing review from an ANN staffer while I was looking for an image that this forum would accept as a posted image.

You got your wish Edjwald. The plot is indeed nothing special and the animation is not amazing either but the sheer goofy cheerfulness and creative art use makes the premiere work. Sae and Kamishiro are charming characters and they get along very well. Despite that it is going to be a struggle to get them together and the biggest challenge is likely going to be how Sae views herself. it reminds me of April Showers Bring May Flowers.

If this were an action anime, I'd be sweating over all of the still frames, nearly still frames, and almost blank backgrounds covered up by glowing bubbles or neon lighting. I mean, it's only episode one and they're already cutting corners to this extent, and I'm still a little scarred by what went down with Water Magician production wise. But it's not an action anime, and the drawing style is pleasant to look at, the orchestral arrangements are smooth, and the characters are likable. The shy, towering female amazon is at least a little bit of a new angle, I think?

Anyhow, I dug it.

A low stress shoujo romance, I like pleasantness every now and then. What has my attention in the show and in the PV show image is the girl in glasses on the far right.

After 20 minutes of watching people in track suits, her clothes and her look stood out and it was just for a brief glimpse during the high school entrance exam. I haven't seen an adaption pull a "look at this character!" in awhile so I'm curious as to why I should be curious.

Do you enjoy an extremely standard delivery of the coming of age girl discovers self-esteem through a handsome mans love?

From ep 1, I strongly suspect the answer to that question and the answer to if you like this show are the same. Like a lot of isekai and similar genre shows, you can pretty much read it from the summary.

In my opinion, that's a potentially misleading question on a couple of fronts. (1) I'm not really sure the gender roles are important here since there are untold numbers of anime about shy guys upping their game by falling for a woman who's beautiful by societal norms and sparkly special effects. Might as well object to that too while we're at it.

(2) the man's looks aren't why she falls in love with him - his blossoming looks are why everyone else is suddenly starting to notice the guy who she knew and liked before he was a hottie. His handsomeness isn't the draw - in fact, it makes her uncomfortable because it puts him in a spotlight that she doesn't want to be near. That's the central conflict, and yes, I think it's sort of interesting.

(3) There's nothing wrong with being shy and introverted. That may cross over with low self esteem, but a lot of people associate low self-esteem as a label for people who act out, are passive aggressive, weak, or cowardly in order to compensate. I don't really see her displaying any of those behaviors unless not asking the guy out earlier is the example of cowardice. In which case, she should become more assertive because she's in love with a guy. A guy who doesn't seem like an asshole by the way, though I can see where he might be irritating by virtue of being too perfect.

(4) Her "low self-esteem" isn't simple. She's insecure about a lot of things. She's insecure about standing out because of her height, for example. She's insecure because she's an adolescent, which kind of goes with the package. She's insecure because her natural athletic prowess doesn't jibe with some image she has of femininity. She's probably naturally a shy and introverted person which isn't inherently bad. Just makes her human.

Of course, it's early days episode wise.

I think you've taken my comment to be slightly hostile to the show which isn't how I mean it; I include myself in the prospective audience. I was merely trying (evidently failing) to be mildly pithy. My description would certainly cover (for example) April Showers Bring May Flowers that I enjoyed last season.

I didn't say anything at all about being shy or introverted, nor that her low self-esteem was simple. I didn't say she fall in love with him because he's handsome- rather, just that he is handsome- naturally, because he's the lead in the anime! None of these were meant as stinging retorts about the shows quality, I was just observing you can probably judge if the show is "for you" pretty quickly and that while it may surprise me the overall trajectory probably isn't unpredictable. I'll give it a couple more episodes and see if I pick it up myself, leaning yes with a thin season for me so far.

I agree in principle that male/female isn't strictly relevant; however, as a matter of practice it is as the more female-centred versions of this trope tend to have far less fan service, which in this genre I find very preferable (there have been quite a few popular reversed versions in the last few years, but they haven't usually worked for me).

Hey Eilavel.

I honestly wasn't sure what you meant - if it was an ironic "Hey, another anime about girls with low self-esteem falling for a handsome guy, woo hoo!" or a straight up "You'd have to be someone who likes anime about girls with low self esteem falling for handsome guys to like this" which is why I put in that stuff about "potentially misleading" or "some people see the words low self-esteem and think" and so on when I went into my anime jail house lawyer mode.

Sorry if that was an over-reaction.

Eh, it was probably unwise of me to be obliquely snarky in relation to a sub-genre that certainly will be looked down on by some.

I was mainly saying that I think anyone who watches episode 1 can accurately judge if they want to watch the show pretty well, simply as it is in its own way a genre piece.

I'm not quite sure why Sae got such a complex about her height. She's barely 3" taller than the height of the average Japanese woman, and in another anime she would've been the "prince" of all the girls for her height and athleticism. And more critically (to some people), she's not taller than most of the boys.

I know kids will pick on anything if they think their target will crumble over it, but at least when it came to Koki, she stood up to them.

I dunno, I guess height is a weird issue humans have, and more pervasive than even racism, as it crosses all the other cultural divisions we've created, and judging people by height seems to be nearly universal.

The show is great at making the viewer clear of just how much Sae and Kouki care for and love each other. Said characters are making it very diffcult for themselves with how they act and word things though. It feels like one of them taking a single step forward would be enough to make them into a couple yet nobody is taking that step. Mio might be right in saying that they should not be rushed but I can understand Hisui looking at things and wondering what the problem is.

As for the height complex, if you have enough idiots like Yuushin in your environment it makes sense to have a complex.

Take a shot every time Sae says they are just friends this episode. Their school also has a lot of events.

(names omitted since I'm now too drunk to remember any but Sae, thanks for that)

Even though tall running guy is clearly falling for Sae, since he can't end up with her, I'm shipping him with glasses girl. They'll bond over their wingman status. Pinkie is too hyper for him.

Just how thick is Sae, that she couldn't figure out how to get the ball out of the fence (or her team mates, for that matter)? oO Stick your fingers through the fence and push, sheesh. Golden retriever boy could move it with one finger.

I do wonder in what direction the romance will go. It is ridiculously obvious that Sae and Kamishiro love each other but both are not capable/willing of making that clear to the other person thus keeping them in a repetitive cycle. Ayukawa meanwhile is indeed showing an interest in Sae and somehow seems like the type to be fairly direct. Kamishiro's mother seems like a fun person btw.
