Our encyclopedia has:
Aoi Yamamoto / 山本 碧 Midori Yamamoto / 山本 みどり (given name listed in Hiragana, not Kanji). 碧 can be read as both Midori (みどり) and Aoi (あおい) According to our Encyclopedia, Aoi Yamamoto was character designer for Fairy Tail, but according to the guest list for Paris Manga & Sci Fi Show, Midori Yamamoto was the character designer for Fairy Tail. It's highly unlikely that an event would get their guest's name wrong. The two entries in our encyclopedia are either the same person, or two different people with mixed up information between them, or two different people named Midori Yamamoto (possibly with mixed up credits). Unfortunately 山本碧 has no entry in Japanese wikipedia, but 山本 みどり is listed. 山本碧 is listed in the credits for Fairy Tail in Wikipedia and other sites. -T |

Sorry if this is a thing which you already know, but actually the Japanese Wikipedia article on '山本みどり' is one about an actress named 山本みどり. |

Well, I just checked Aldnoah.Zero episode 12 (Aoi is listed as Animation Director), and I didn't see either of them anywhere. I thought I did see the 山本 kanji, so it might be someone else completely, I'd have to check on my laptop to see if I can get a closer credits.
Not sure if Tokko has the Japanese credits in it, but I'll check later if I can find my DVDs. |

According to Anime@wiki, 山本碧 is:
Assistant animation director of Michiko & Hatchin (Manglobe, 2008, w/ AIC Spirits) Character designer and animation director of Fairy Tail (A-1 Pictures, 2009, w/ AIC Spirits) Animation director of Aldnoah.Zero (A-1 Pictures, 2014) Anime@wiki lists the furigana of her name as (やまもとみどり?), with a question mark showing uncertainty. Anime@wiki has no information regarding 山本みどり. ===== A related website, Sakuga@wiki, lists 山本碧 as: An animator affiliated to AIC Spirits Key animator of the opening sequence of Tokyo Majin (BeSTACK + AIC Spirits, 2007) Key animator of Tokyo Majin 2 (BeSTACK + AIC Spirits, 2007) Key animator of Xam'd: Lost Memories ep. 11 (Bones, 2008, w/ AIC Spirits) Key animator of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Bones, 2009, w/ AIC Spirits) Sakuga@wiki lists 山本みどり as an in-between animator of 16 City Hunter episodes (Sunrise, 1987) ===== Allcinema adds 山本碧 as a key animator of The Sacred Blacksmith (Manglobe, 2009). Allcinema does not have any 山本みどり credited as an animator; instead it has entries of two live-action actresses, born 1957 and 1928. The Japanese Wikipedia has similar results, respectively. ===== .lain only has 山本碧 working on Fairy Tail; no information on 山本みどり. ===== Dengeki Online mentioned 山本碧 had worked on Michiko & Hatchin in the announcement of Fairy Tail anime. ===== There's a YouTube account named 山本碧 who has "liked" many anime and anime-related clips. ===== DrillSpin has an account of 山本碧 as an animator spelled "Midori Yamamoto" who worked on Fairy Tail. ===== Google searches of 山本碧 are overwhelmingly Fairy Tail-related, with occasional mentioning of Michiko & Hatchin, The Sacred Blacksmith, and Ikki Tousen: Extravaganza Epoch (ARMS, 2014) here and there. Google searches of 山本みどり, however, are more diverse, but mostly as an in-between animator of various vintage titles, such as: In-between animator of Muteki Robo Trider G7 (Sunrise, 1980) In-between animator of Sentō Mecha Xabungle (Sunrise, 1982) In-between animator of Panzer World Galient: Tetsu no Monshō (Sunrise, 1986) In-between animator of Bats and Terry (Sunrise, 1987) In-between animator of A Wind Named Amnesia (Madhouse, 1990) In-between animator of Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (Sunrise, 1991) In-between animator of The Vision of Escaflowne (Sunrise, 1996) In-between animator of Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Miller's Report (Sunrise, 1998) In-between animator of Cowboy Bebop (Bones, 1998) In-between animator of Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (Bones, 2001) In-between animator of Wolf's Rain (Bones, 2003) In-between animator of Inuyasha the Movie 4: Fire on the Mystic Island (Sunrise, 2004) In-between animator of Ouran High School Host Club (Bones, 2006, w/ AIC Spirits) That's an impressive list. However, if all of them are the same person then she has been working in the industry for more than 34 years. ===== So what's the verdict? Q: What's the correct pronunciation of 碧? A: I'd say "Midori" is more likely to be the correct one. There are two sources with "Midori" but no source with "Aoi," at this moment. Q: Are 山本碧 and 山本みどり the same person? A: Possibly, with reservations. There's no record of 山本みどり after 2006 and no record of 山本碧 before 2007, indicating the same person might have been working with Sunrise, Bones, and AIC Spirits. If there's no objection in 24 hours I'll merge #78632 into #40190. Last edited by dormcat on Sun Nov 16, 2014 5:48 pm; edited 3 times in total |

So we have
山本緑 / Yamamoto Midori - Voice Actress born in 1928 山本みどり / Yamamoto Midori - Voice Actress born in 1957 山本碧 / Yamamoto Midori (possibly Aoi) - Animator 山本みどり / Yamamoto Midori - Animator (possibly same person as 山本碧) I can't find a photograph of 山本碧 anywhere. We have a good relationship with several of these studios. I will ask Uehira to check with A-1 Pictures. Please do not merge the entries yet, but please make a comment in each of them listing a potential problem and linking to this webpage. Can some one summarize a list of works for me that 山本碧 and 山本みどり (animator) are believed to have worked on ? |

With the exception of a cameo role in Ojamajo Doremi # of the former (born 1928), the two are live-action actresses and have little to do with voice acting.
It has never been easy to find a photograph of anime staff other than directors, writers who are also novelists, or non-seiyuu musicians already famous outside anime fandom.
Done.
Sorted by time, with references linked. 山本みどり In-between animator of Muteki Robo Trider G7 (Sunrise, 1980) In-between animator of Sentō Mecha Xabungle (Sunrise, 1982) In-between animator of Panzer World Galient: Tetsu no Monshō (Sunrise, 1986) In-between animator of Bats and Terry (Sunrise, 1987) In-between animator of City Hunter (Sunrise, 1987) In-between animator of A Wind Named Amnesia (Madhouse, 1990) In-between animator of Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (Sunrise, 1991) In-between animator of The Vision of Escaflowne (Sunrise, 1996) In-between animator of Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Miller's Report (Sunrise, 1998) In-between animator of Cowboy Bebop (Bones, 1998) In-between animator of Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (Bones, 2001) In-between animator of Wolf's Rain (Bones, 2003) In-between animator of Inuyasha the Movie 4: Fire on the Mystic Island (Sunrise, 2004) In-between animator of Ouran High School Host Club (Bones, 2006, w/ AIC Spirits) 山本碧 Key animator of the opening sequence of Tokyo Majin (BeSTACK + AIC Spirits, 2007) Key animator of Tokyo Majin 2 (BeSTACK + AIC Spirits, 2007) Key animator of Xam'd: Lost Memories ep. 11 (Bones, 2008, w/ AIC Spirits) Assistant animation director of Michiko & Hatchin (Manglobe, 2008, w/ AIC Spirits) Key animator of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Bones, 2009, w/ AIC Spirits) Key animator of The Sacred Blacksmith (Manglobe, 2009) Character designer and animation director of Fairy Tail (A-1 Pictures, 2009, w/ AIC Spirits) Animation director of Aldnoah.Zero (A-1 Pictures, 2014) Animation director of Ikki Tousen: Extravaganza Epoch (ARMS, 2014) |

山本みどり - Midori Yamamoto, in-between career artist
Employed by Studio Joke (1979~1982, mostly Toei sub-contracting), had a seat at Nippon Sunrise/Sunrise (1980~2000), and worked for Bones probably eventually going freelance and having a desk there (2000~2019?). Assumingly freelance until at least until 2022 (they have no credits since then, so they may have retired) 山本碧 - Midori Yamamoto, sometimes credited as 山本みどり Employed by AIC Spirits, then went freelance. Worked around A1 and later found themself at TROYCA, which was founded by former AIC staff (largely from Spirits and Classic). They seem to have left the industry in 2019 山本みどり should be its own entry and have entirely in-between animation credits 山本碧 should be renamed from Aoi Yamamoto to Midori Yamamoto, and all key animation/2nd key animation/animation direction credits should be moved to it from 山本みどり. Generally speaking, long in-between career artists rarely flop back-and-forth between in-between animation and key animation, especially someone who would be so busy on so many Bones episodes. Junko Nishimura (SHAFT-->Production I.G) dedicated her career to in-betweens and in-between direction, as has Tatsuya Kawashima since he joined Studio Kikan in 1993 (Studio Kikan/ARMS/Studio Signpost). |
