I gotta say that, as somebody who grew up with two chainsmoking parents, this makes my stomach turn a little bit. This is such a weird thing to fetishize. I could kinda understand appreciating the aesthetic if you've never lived around a smoker, but smoking is still common enough in Japan that I'd expect most people to have some real-life experience with it...

Both my grandfathers suffered awfully from lung and breathing issues due to smoking, one having to use oxygen machines, and both died in their 70s from various heath problems from that. It was a huge burden on both sides of the family. Mine were in poverty for a long time, so the money of simply buying cigarettes was terrible waste. Ironically, my parents became tobacconists for many years, but never smoked or drank themselves. I think they had good reason to avoid that.

No one tell PETA that there is a manga about a human-cat smoking.

I agree. To me, "uncleanliness" is an astray full of cigarettes' bums. But if a catgirl does it's sexy now?

Have yall read the manga
This is one of these comedies where the mc is disgusting, and smoking is painted Ina disgusting way, unlike the smoking maids manga...damn that last one made me want a cig
One of the jokes in Yani neko is that she finds a cigarette stuck in dog poop and she still smokes it.

Have you read the review of the manga? It doesn't seem to be fetishised, MC is just pretty awful being, a total failcat. Quote from the review:
| Quote: | | Yanni Neko is disgusting. She is lazy, stupid, gross, and obnoxious. If the character were a generic dude rather than a cat girl, I can't imagine anyone enjoying this comic much. But Yanni is a catgirl and very much an animal, so jokes about peeing and vomiting, and seeing how much of the cigarette stuck in a turd she can still smoke, is the story… and I guess it kind of works. There is no redemption here, no progression; |

I too had a chain-smoking mother, so I get where you are coming from. I'll never forget the state and smell of the smoking areas I was dragged around as a kid. This trailer captures that a lot. But Japan is still a big tobacco market, so it's not surprising that series like this exists. Though it does seem to indulge in smoking further than most. Even Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You uses it as a basis for characters to interact, rather than the main focus.

Japan's new obsession nowadays is "zombie cigarettes" (it's not what ya think)
