All things in balance, I say. People like to say that the idea of social networks, or even the Internet itself, is an evil. The reality of it is that companies with no moral considerations, keen on addicting people to their products, are the real harm, not the concepts themselves. This are supposed to enhance our lives, not take away from them.

So, in a sense, Needy Girl Overdose reflects the reality, and Chou Kaguya-hime reflects the potential, if you will.

Another topic that came to mind is our tendency to search for easy ways out of problems. Several countries are considering a ban of under-16 or other age brackets from Social Networks. As Zoe Williams pointed out in The Guardian, that's just shifting the blame and responsibility. Companies created this hellscape, and they are the ones who most have to answer for their malpractices.

Then there's the fact that such bans are supported by charming institutions such as the Heritage Foundation and similar reactionaries. Why? Because, despite all the (undeniable) harm that emerged from the Social Network craze, it was also the Internet that allowed Queer youth to connect, for instance. It was the same Internet that helped me fall in love with metal and anime.

So my appeal to people is to not surrender to simplistic "solutions" that end up solving nothing, and just disguise the problem. And more importantly, to anybody who is a parent here: Listen to your sons and daughters. Listen to their concerns and teach them about the dangers of the Internet. It's not going away, and you don't actually want it to g away, as many in Russia are finding out the hard way.

I'd like to end this by referencing the fun anime that is Mayonaka Punch. And any reference to Serial Experiments Lain (an anime I love to death) will remind me of Key the Metal Idol for some reason. Boogiepop Phantom also, but that's neither here nor there.
