I find Shuri's inclusion as Black Panther quite interesting, on one hand, I don't know if Marvel/Disney still wants to honor the late Chadwick Boseman's legacy as Black Panther by not having T'Challa as the main Black Panther, I remember hearing that there's a sort of mandate that T'Challa is not appearing in certain works, like X-Men '97 where instead his father T'Chaka appeared as Black Panther. On the other hand, the main Avengers team almost always features Captain America, Iron-Man, Hulk and Thor, I guess both ArcSys and Marvel wanted to include a female character in the Avengers team, though usually it's always The Wasp or Black Widow the main female member in the original Avengers team. Now I think it's possible that Thor will be a DLC character

That's disappointing to see but I guess the writing was there when they didn't have Johnny Blaze, as Ghost Rider. Sad to see this game become victim to the MCU synergy like MvC Infinite before it.

If that's actually the reason that is genuinely sad to hear. That's like if DC never used Bruce Wayne again because Adam West, Kevin Conroy, or some other actor who portrayed him in an adaption died. Since when are actors who portray the character in a completely unrelated adaption a lynchpin to a character to the point they have to be retired in everything else out of respect once the actor who plays them in one adaption dies? Sounds crazy to me.. |

Well, after some digging and talking with a friend who knows a lot about comics, it seems Shuri already took the mantle of Black Panther in the comics way back in 2009, and T'Challa does appear as BP in Marvel Rivals, so maybe ArcSys chose Shuri on their own. Honestly, I don't see a lot of synergy with the MCU, I mean, Peni Parker is a character in this game and she is more well known for her appearence in the Spider-Verse movies, which are made by Sony Pictures, though technically Sony is producing Marvel Tōkon, but I find weird the idea that both Sony and Disney are using the game to promote 2 different movie franchises. |

I'm going to add that Shuri's tenure as BP was an astonishingly brief period. She only lead one ongoing that canned at 12 issues and lead into the Doom War event which brought back T'Challa as protagonist. Afterwards he's been the star of every BP ongoing and anytime a team has BP in it its always T'Challa in it while Shuri simply becomes a supporting character who manages the Wakandan throne so T'Challa is free to have more adventures.
Then she died in the middle of the 2010s where upon being brought back to life retired the Black Panther identity and became Griot. She had as much page-time as the protagonist as Kasper Cole, the biracial light-skinned guy from the Priest run who was Black Panther for only the tail-end of Priest's run before being forgotten about after it ended. While it is unclear how enforced the mandate on T'Challa's media appearances is, he has appeared in both Rivals and the Cosmic Invasion video game so it seems like he isn't barred from video games. So the decision was probably made more on ArcSys' end. |

Likely similar and no less stupid than the mandate that DC Comics or WB had where you couldn’t have or mention Batman in the Teen Titans cartoon and later not have Superman or Wonder Woman named or have their faces shown in The Brave & The Bold (though whatever that was eventually was rescinded).
MCU synergy and yet they have Kamala who’s not been used in much since the Marvels in the roster along with Danger who has never been featured in anything outside the comics? They’re going with characters that are popular and those most audiences don’t know. Just the same as the Capcom Marvel games. |

Given how ASW has been reusing moves/mechanics from other games (e.g. Storm literally having Rachel from Blazblue's wind mechanic), The decision to use Shuri was also probably at least in part so they reuse some moves from one of their various spear characters, like Zeta from GBVS, Mai Natsume & Izayoi in BB, or Sin Kiske in GG.

Kamala has been an industry plant character for over a decade now with her being included in just about everything including being the star of the the ill-fated Avengers game so it's basically a given she's going to be in everything. Since T'challa is in Rivals and the upcoming Cosmic Invasion I'll just assume this is a decision made solely by Arc Sys rather than the usual character mandate meddling we often see in these games from Marvel though unless they're just now deciding that they want Black Panther to be a woman going forward and it's a very recent mandate on their part. After seeing people compare Hulk's animations to some other bruiser characters in GG Strive I'm also inclined to agree with OpenYourEels4TheNextFeels's post that it could also just be a case of them finding a way to re-use animations |

With only 20 characters in the initial roster, I suppose there will be three more villains to make up the team led by Doctor Doom, while Ghost Rider will lead a Midnight Sons-type team, which will hopefully include Doctor Strange. After that, I'll keep hoping there will be a second X-Men quartet led by Cyclops once they start adding DLC characters.

Given that both T’Challa and Shuri were both in Fornite one can easily come to the conclusion there is no supposed mandate. The problem seems to be people latching on to conspiracies that don’t exist. |

This is just the inverse of Cosmic Invasion where we got T'challa as BP, but they went with Jen instead of Bruce for Hulk. Now we're getting Bruce and Shuri. Seems fair imo.
Apparently the lore reason is that Doom beat the sleeves off of T'challa prior to the events of the game and he's still recovering, so it leaves room for potential DLC down the line. All that aside, holy shit I gotta glaze Hulk here. This is probably the best looking version of the character I've ever seen in a video game. Not only is he bigger than Broly, his proportions aren't Potemkin levels of insane. They absolutely nailed his design, and Fred Tatasciore is once again proving why he's the definitive voice for Hulk. |

Industry plant? lol ok Maybe, just maybe, Kamala Khan is in a bunch of stuff because she is literally one of the more popular new additions to the Marvel universe and people actually like her character. She has had successful and well-written comic runs. Easily garnering fans. But you chuds like to pretend anything more diverse in media doesn't naturally have fans and are allegedly just token and/or pandering. |

Speaking of industry plant characters: I find it so invigorating Peni Parker blew up in popularity and got into both Rivals and Tokon before Miles Morales himself despite it being his own movie that she got popular because of. It really shows you just how no matter how much companies keep trying to make certain characters a thing by forcing them into everything and hooking them onto popular characters that's no substitute for organic, genuine appeal and likeability.
I think Japanese devs just really appreciate making sexy female characters so they probably just picked Shuri to have an excuse to have a big breasted woman in a skin-tight outfit. I'd laugh if this game actually makes Shuri popular ( at least this depiction of her) |
