| Quote: | | Characters are inexpressive and without personality, the plot seems to ramble on, I just don't get why the anime goes back and forth with Lizel's noble status |
Did we watch the same show? oO It was not inconsistent about his nobility. He's a noble in his world, he's not in the new world, but his dress and demeanor mark him as such to the people he encounters. He himself never claimed to be a noble, and always corrected people the first time they mistook him for one. If they persisted in treating him as such, he didn't bother to keep correcting them. That's not the show going back and forth on the issue, it's the characters' reactions to him.
This was one of my favorite shows of winter season, and I looked forward to every episode. One of the things I really liked was that you really had to pay attention to understand a lot of what was going on instead of them spoon feeding you. And so much is conveyed via body language and facial expressions. Which is why I'm baffled by the reviewer saying the characters were inexpressive. I just really enjoyed watching Lizel watch things, from the moment he found himself in this new world. You could practically see the gears turning with just a slight tilt of his head or faint arch of brow. That is, if you were actually watching and not multitasking...?
Then there was the whole dungeon paintings thing that really threw me for a loop, and dungeon guides that were sometimes loot drops deep inside the dungeons. Very creative ideas.
Aside from all that, there was apparently a big deal about the author claiming this was definitely not a BL series. Which, watching it, seemed like them either not wanting to be shelved in the BL hinterlands or slyly trolling readers, much as Lizel often did. Because this was the gayest not gay series I've ever seen, and that never got old. I mean that scene in episode 9 of Lizel investigating Eleven's venom kinda has to be seen to be believed.
So I'd definitely recommend this as a very fun, very laid back not-quite-iyashikei watch, and I really hope it gets a second season, though I guess I won't be surprised if it doesn't since it seems to have flown under the radar.

This was one of my favorite series of the season. I liked the rather laid back pace and the seiyuu chosen did a nice job of conveying the lack of facial expressions and emotion most of the time.
It probably also helped that I always imaged Lizel, Gil, Studd, Judge, and Eleven having a gang bang. This series is entirely too homoerotic to ever say that the male characters aren’t primarily queer and all in love with Lizel.

I like the manga so was inclined to like the anime, my only real critique is the art, especially in early episodes some shots go full bore Gakuen Handsome, and I spent my time hoping that it wouldn't deteriorate further.

In the synopsis, I think "sword-for-fire" probably should be "sword-for-hire".

I enjoyed this one. I too had a different impression to the reviewer where I felt like they had good chemistry and there was enough expression and details to show the depths of the main characters if you wanted to look for it. I loved the quiet confidence of Lizel that drew everyone to him, and how perfectly Gil complemented that (and was also probably a little envious of how he carried himself)
I also did think the dungeon loot stuff was brilliant. I love the idea of the dungeon recording its own history by generating paintings and other art
