It depends on what you are looking for. Macross:DYRL is a movie wereas Robotech is a series. I own both DYRL and Robotech as well as the Macross boxset. While I'm happy with all three, Macross is much better than Robotech since Robotech (as a whole series) is a mish-mash of different series put together to make one series. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Picking between Robotech and DYRL, I would easily choose DYRL since, in my opinion, it is one of the better anime movies from the 80's.
Plus Minmay can actually sing in Macross.

Having grown up on Robotech and Voltron Robotech would be my choice.
Some dont like it but I think it was done well for the time period.

I would go buy the remastered boxsets. I dislike Minmai and Hikaru/Rick, I much prefer Max, and he is much cooler in the orginal. Plus the remaster version is so much more neater than the degraded master of the Macross Arc of Robotech.

I grew up watching Robotech and only Robotech and loved Robotech, but then a friend gave me Clash of the Bionoids and when I asked him why it was so different from Robotech he said it was because it was based on Macross and not Robotech. I always thought Robotech was just an American released retelling of Macross, but the encyclopedia here says you are right and that it is based also on Mospeada and Southern Cross.
So, does that make Robotech completely different from Macross entirely as a series? Like are the plots and characters the same? Robotech is primarily based upon Macross right, or is it really a mixed up combination of the three mentioned? I've never really even heard of Mospeada or Southern Cross... Are they any good?

Well, after the first generation, you're watching the other two shows. Footage is clipped together and it does make some sense. However, their are some major changes in tone and feel between Macross and the Macross saga of Robotech. Macross is more gritty and real, rather than the whitewashing Robotech gave.

I remember watching Robotech back in the day, but don't remember any specifics except that Rick guy and the Veritech fighter with the skull and crossbones (i had a model kit of it). Even though all 3 shows are cut and pasted together, you can still follow the story? How does that work? Are those 3 shows that similar?

All have mecha, and war. Macross is pretty much the first 36 episodes, while the next set of 26 or so is the Master's saga, which is rewritten Southern Cross, and the last batch is called the Invid saga, and is from the underrated Genesis Climber Moespia. You get the gist of the story by watching each one, but the tone and names, and important plot points are changed. The endings are really messed up as to make the join make sense. Macross is the least hurt, Southern Cross is just butchered to death.
Also, Roy Fokker 0WNZ you. He makes Macross Zero worth it.

Well,here is my opinion.
Macross:DYRL have better storyline than Robotech.
Roy Focker is my favorite character even though he scarified himself to save Hikaru and the others inside the alien base. He was the best.
Secondly Max is really a good pilot in Macross compare to Robotech. And after a few fight with the alien gal. Both of them fell in love.
Hikaru is a fellow who first fall in love with Minmay during both of them are trapped in a darkpit for a few days but later he has a sudden change of heart to a gal name Lisa who is the captain's assistant if i'm not mistaken.Don't how he changed his love but what i know that Minmay did something wrong to him.
And the fighting part now,i still remember that Minmay's song affected a lot of alien and a few of the rebel aliens against the leader. Then after that the end of story.
After that i have watched an epilogue on macross which is Hikaru marry to Lisa. Then Max and the others were there.I don't know whether it is belong to Macross or Robotech.
Then later i watch another episod of macross which is about a a young guy took motorbike which can transform into a human mecha. The outlook is so damn cool.I like that episod. If i'm not mistaken the name of the anime is Mospeada which is another part of Macross not Robotech.
Later i didn't catch up any of the series or episod of Macross.
Maybe i should get the macross:DYRL box collection set.

It was going to be Harmony Gold (Carl Macek)'s attempt to continue the Robotech story. Remember: Hikaru (Macross) Rick (Robotech) Misa (Macross) Lisa (Robotech). Some of those name changes that we get so often.

Ah guys, You have it messed up.
"Macross: Do You Remember Love" is a Movie. There is really no copy dubbed that is widely available. The name of the main character is Hikaru.
Super Dimensional Fortress: Macross is the show it is based off of. The only real copies in R1 are the remastered set. They are very nice, and only in subs. It has an issue with Harmony Gold to use the english tracks.
Harmony Gold, a toy company, bought the rights of three mecha series in the early eighties. They edited them together to form Robotech. Robotech has most of Macross as the first third, with two other shows filling up the rest. The Motorcycles belong to the second show, called the master's saga, but its real name is Super-dimensional Calvary Southern Cross. (It could be Mospeada, but the first episodes of the master's saga were focused on the cycles)
And next time use the blackout tags.

As for a dubbed copy of the movie, it's available on VHS under the title of Clash of the Bionoids. Of course, it isn't easy to find. Unfortunately, there isn't an R1 DVD version of the movie. Your only choices are to get an R2 version or......

. | Actually, the motorcycles Alucard00 was talking about were in Mospeada (aka:Next Generation). The young guy Alucard00 is referring to is Bernard.

Macross DYRL-- is a movie that was made, in regards to the timeline of the world in Super Dimesional Fortress Macross, after the events shown in the TV show, if I remember correctly. Meaning, it is a retelling, a reflection of what the inhabitants on the ship made out of the "real" events in the original show-- i.e. they based DYRL on the "true events" in Macross TV. That is part of the reason that the movie doesn't totally agree with the events in the show. It's just a lil' tidbit I found interesting. Is it correct??
Also, Southern Cross has hover bikes in the first few episodes.
The transforming motorcycles are in Mosepada, most definitely. They were called "Cyclones" in Robotech, I believe.
I'd vote for getting the digitally remastered set of the Macross TV show from Animeigo over the other two options also. I havn't seen DYRL love yet. The box sets of Robotech aren't bad though, if you have your heart set on them, particularly the first three box sets (which have all the Rick Hunter episodes)-- as they have lots of extras, and it's at a pretty reasonable price. The sound and picture and music and depth of character really is a lot better though in the original subtitled Macross being released by Animeigo.
Also, as a side note-- does anyone else here have a beef with the extra 11 episodes they added to Macross after the original release?? This is the final 9 episodes of the 36 (both in Macross and Robotech), plus the two recap eps-- Gloval's report (ep 14) and the one where Rick is in a delusional state in the hospital (ep 17 or 18)..... I only really watch the "original" 25 eps anymore, I skip the two recaps and don't watch the final 9. It's such a better show that way (less filler), and the ending has far more emotional impact (to me).
Does anyone else do this?? Or even know about this fact of the original versus extra/added epsidoes? What are your opinions on them??

I believe the characters make a few references to it (the DYRL movie) in Macross 7.

When it comes to collecting Robotech, get the complete collections. That is the best way to go $$-wise. And less boxes.

| True. True. I found the last 9 episodes to be something of a buzzkill. Glovals Report was unnecessary but I don't have a real problem with Phantasm. I think it fits into the story fairly well.

I think the last nine were a mixed bag, it showed the raw brutal truth of it, but was paced poorly and a bit of an anti-climax.
